No Funds Could Mean No Detroiters Money Woes Weigh on Maccabiah Athletes By CHARLOTTE HYAMS Dick Giller's heart hangs about as heavy as one of those 200-pound weights he picks up for recreation after work. If the funds don't come through, the Detroiter won't be competing in the Seventh World Maccabiah Games in Tel Aviv next month. And that's about as heavy a loss as any man can take. For Giller — at 5'7" and 165 pounds a compact hunk of man— winning competitions is nothing new. He just would like to add a third gold medal to his Maccabiah record as first-place middleweight winner in 1953 and light-heavy- weight in 1961. on the other hand, losing out wouldn't be a new experience either. Residing in Florida in 1957, she wasn't able to participate in the Games because the local Macca- biah committee couldn't raise enough funds. He fears a repeat this year. MAKE YOUR CONTRIBUTION THIS TISHA b'AB TO THE Lou Handler, Detroit chairman of the campaign, has issued an appeal for contributions to send three athletes to Israel. It costs roughly S1,500 each, and only a fraction has been raised to date. Thus, Giller, Robert Tarnow of the volleyball team and Harvey Rubenstein, captain of the U.S. rowing team, face an uncertain Maccabiah future. Rubenstein is a little more opti- mistic. The 1961 Maccabiah gold medalist is already in Philadelphia training for the Games under the supervision of Allen P. Rosenberg. the 1964 U.S. Olympic coach, who will direct the 12-man crew in Israel. With Rubenstein in Philadelphia is his bride of a year, the former Sharon Young, also a native of the Detroit area. A physical edu- cation instructor in the Farming- ton Schools Sys- tem, the Oak Park athlete is the son of the Nathan 1Rubensteins of • Santa Barbara Rubenstein Ave., Southfield. The rowing teams at the Games will no doubt regard the U.S. captain with some appre- hension: Rubenstein is the only member of his 1961 team to earn J.N.F. whole Israel economy — it ...• JEWISH NATIONAL FUND MORE GENEROUS! In those games, the U.S. won three gold medals in three rowing events. A year later, Rubenstein cap- tained the Wayne State Univer- sity crew and was a participant in the Olympics. If the fund-raising fortunes of Detroit's athletes shift for the bet- ter, the Macca- biah will have a special meaning for Bob Tarnow: The volleyball team alternate is ' k:; getting marrie&i'"' Aug. 19. His bride of a few days, now Kathryn Marton, will ac- company him to Tarnow to Israel. Tarnow, son of the Nathan Tar- nows of Franklin Fairway, Farm- ington, is a favorite son of the Jewish Center, having played in its volleyball league and seen his team place first in a YMCA league this year. A Mumford and Wayne State graduate in accounting, Tar- now will be a reliefer for the Mac- cabiah players, all of Los Angeles. * * * The Maccabiah is billed as the "Jewish Olympics," and the ath- letes it draws prove that a minor- ity can flex its muscles with pride. Detroiter Bob Morrison has seen it happen time and again—as a team member in the first Maccabiah Games and as American manager of track and field in 1950 and 1953. Now he's helping Handler, another one-time athletic great, run the fund-raising campaign here. There are supposed to be 200 members on the U. S. squad in Tel Aviv Aug. 21-30. Jewish ath- letes from 35 nations will par- ticipate in the 20-sport program. This year there may be no De- troiters among them—at least no Detroiter named Dick Giller. At 34, Giller has an impressive list of sports victories. Besides his Maccabiah medals, the Ohio native holds records as National Colle- giate champ in 1950 (he majored in commerce, speech and drama at Kent State), a junior national championship in '53, National AAU championship two years later, Florida State championship and record in '62 and Michigan State championship and record in '63-'64. For seven years he was Ohio state champion, and he held the Great Lakes title "oh, four or five years." There is a longer list, but they're just little ones." Although he holds the Michigan State Press Record for lifting 2871/2 pounds, Giller's heaviest weight was a recent 337. His idea of keeping in shape is a two-hour workout daily at the Northeastern Branch YMCA, where he is president of the Weight Lifting Club. Although he does a lot of running and swimming, Giller spends most of his free time with the weights. The salesman-importer admits there's little time for a sport he learned during the Korean War: sky diving as a paratrooper. In- stead (he blushed at the admis- sion) he's a sedentary informa- tion officer — captain — with the Air Force Reserves. Calorie-counting is no concern of Giller's, but he does follow a Rus- sian custom of fasting once a Contributors who wish to help send Detroit's Jewish athletes to the Maccabiah Games may make out checks to the U.S. Committee Sports for Israel, 9141 Monica, De- troit 4. He alters his high-protein diet be- fore a competition, turning to car- bohydrate foods for energy. Speaking of the Russians, "If the Jewish athletes of the Soviet Union were allowed to compete in the 11Iaccabiah," he said, "their weight lifters would walk away with the prizes. They're the tops." As for the U.S., "we'll probably do well in swimming, track and wrestling. "Much of Israel's strength," he went on, "lies in soccer. But in Is- rael anything can happen." Giller speaks from experience. In 1953, "our team slept on straw in tents, and we all had dysen- tery. In '61, the change was the difference between night and day. An entire Maccabiah village was waiting for us, with rooms and beds and much better food." Giller, who is a bachelor, also observed "the girls were slimmer in 1961, too. Israel's economy had improved, and there was less starch in their diet." Giller seemed to like the subject of the conservation and stuck with it a minute longer. "The women on the U.S. team can't really com- pare with the Israeli girls. It could be the Israelis' army training .. . or maybe American girls are just lazy." He added, "Don't quote me on that." The reporter smiled. "Of course not." "You know," Giller mused, "it would be nice to go back and see them ... I hope I get the chance."
