Jewish Groups Aid Anti-Poverty Programs The involvement of agencies and voluntary organizations of the De- troit Jewish community in phases of the anti-poverty program was outlined at the season's concluding meeting of the internal relations committee of the Jewish Com- munity Council. The IRC co-chair- man, Hubert J. Sidlow, noted that in addition to central community response, a number of Council af- filiates and local Jewish youth groups are currently engaged in a variety of anti-poverty and cul- tural enrichment programs con- nected with the effort. Samuel Cohen, assistant director of the Jewish Welfare Federation, stated that all local Jewish social- welfare agencies working through the United Community Services, have been involved in planning programs related to Detroit's Total Action Against Po v e r t y (TP) program. Sinai Hospital has pro- vided medical and surgical serv- ices to 100 boys between the ages of 16-21 involved in the Mayor's Youth Employment Program and expects to service another 500 youth as part of the Manpower Re- development and Training Act. Mrs. Jerome Grossman and Mrs. Ben Schottenfels of the National Council of Jew i s h Women de- scribed two current NCJW projects. The Women In Com- munity Service (WIC8) program is a cooperative volunteer effort con- sisting of Catholic, Protestant and Jewish women's organizations. This effort involves a contractural re- lationship with the government in an anti-poverty program related to education and re-training. NCJW also has participated in a remedial program in the Detroit public schools. Mrs. Milton Schwartz, repre- senting the Women's Division of the American Jewish Congress, re- ported on a cultural enrichment program begun by AJ Congress at the Crossman School where 30 women were involved in a pilot endeavor. William Sbavitz, president of the Michigan State Temple Youth, de- scribed a tutorial project involving 25 MSTY workers which took place at the Fairbanks School. The pro- gram consisted of supplementing normal school work with special tutorial efforts in reading and mathematics. Shavitz said plans are now being made for an ex- panded tutorial program involving MSTY and youth groups from the National Association for the Ad- vancement of Colored People.
