Ben Gitlow Dead; Dr. Irving Canter,
Communist Party Social Scholar Dies
CHICAGO (JTA) — Dr. Irving
Founder, Later Foe Canter,
who just completed service
NEW YORK—Benjamin Gitlow,
a founder of the Communist Party
of the United States, died Monday
at his Crompond, N. Y.,. home. He
was '73.
His party's candidate for vice
president in 1924 and 1928, Mr.
Gitlow later turned against com-
munism, writing an autobiography,
"I Confess: The Truth About Amer-
ican Communism."
Back in 1924, he had promised
in his campaign that if elected,
"We will use one room in the
White House and turn the rest of
the mansion into apartments for
the workers and poor farmers."
Sixteen years later he denounced
communism because of "this en-
slavement of the human mind, this
proscription of independent think-
ing."
After World War 1, Mr. Gitlow
was sentenced to a 5-10 year term
for criminal anarchy.
That case, Gitlow vs. New York,
became a landmark decision of
the U.S. Supreme Court, which
affirmed his conviction 7-2. Only
Justices Louis D. Brandeis and
Oliver Wendell Holmes dissented.
After serving three years on the
state felony charge, he was par-
doned by Gov. Alfred E. Smith.
In 1918, Mr. Gitlow was a Social-
ist member of the New York As-
sembly; he left the party in 1919
to help found the Communist Party
and for the next 10 years was one
of its most prominent members.
He was • a member of the executive
committee of the Commist Inter-
national and a member of its pre-
sidium. Mr. Gitlow and his followers
were expelled when Marshal Stalin
castigated the American delegates
to a congress of the International
in Moscow in 1929. They were ac-
cused of refusing to follow the
international line.
Mr. Gitlow continued his left-
wing activities with splinter Com-
munist groups, but after a few
years turned completely against
both the party and communism.
He was a government witness
for many congressional and local
investigations of subversive activi-
ties and lectured and wrote ex-
tensively against communism.
Mr. Gitlow became a strong sup-
porter of the Republican Party
and was among the most active
workers in behalf of General
Dwight D. Eisenhower's candidacy
for President.
