THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 38—Friday, July 23, 1965 Gamzey credits Israel with having enriched American cul- ture itself by a stream of artists and musicians who have come here. Turning to fund-raising, he as- serts that Israel sharpened the sights for hundreds of thousands of contributors and "taught them how to give." He declares that "for the tour- ist, a visit to Israel is a revitaliz- ing dose of Jewish pride in what Jews can accomplish in building and defending a pioneer land." Thus, from all angles, Gamzey portrays Israel as the miraculous development in Jewish life which has to its credit innumerable achievements. `The Pawnbroker' a Sell-Out Beyond All Previous Highs "The Pawnbroker" has broken all records for total weekly attend- ance in the four-year history of the Studio North Theater. Now in its third week, the film shattered its opening record with receipts of $8,086 and then went on to take in $8,160 in the second week. Total attendance was 10,000. The previous high for an opening week was $6,250 when the theater first opened in 1961. Ross Caccavale, general man- ager of the three Studio theaters, attributes the box office success of the Eli Landau production to several factors, primarily "the greatness of the film." "The Pawnbroker" has drawn a great number of young peo- ple, Caccavale said, possibly because of their unfamiliarity with the World War II Nazi hor- rors, depicted in unique sublim- ial flashbacks throughout the movie. The "greater social awareness among young people today" was also cited, in refer- ence to "The Pawnbroker's" Harlem setting. The film, at first censored for two scenes of nudity, was later approved by the Motion Picture Production Code. It marked the first time there had been such a reversal. Caccavale pointed out that no one who has seen the film here has proposed censorship of the scenes, "and anyway we allow no one under 18 to see it. We show the film as a work of art." "The Pawnbroker" has drawn a large Jewish audience, and the impact on them is such that "they all look stunned when they leave," said Caccavale. The film, also being shown at the Camelot in Dearborn, has ap- pealed to Negro moviegoers as well, he said. At the Camelot it is expected to run till Aug. 10. Caccavale predicted a longer run at the Studio-North—perhaps six months. "But I wouldn't be sur- prised at anything," he said. There's nothing typical about the film, or the response it's getting." (
