While this businessman was
talkative, his neighbor, an elderly
Jew from Stamford Hill, was
silent. He was coughing and wheez-
ing and pressed a handkerchief
against his mouth. He wore ga-
loshes over his shoes, thick woolen
socks, a winter suit and waistcoat,
two pullovers, a heavy coat with
a fur collar and was swathed in
three colored scarves. In spite of
all this clothing, he was trembling
with cold.
"Oh dear," he moaned, "that
terrible London fog which always
concentrates on Stamford Hill . . .
Filthy black fog, as thick and
rigid as an iron curtain . . .' 3
It seemed a miracle that he had
survived last year's fog, but it had
left its mark upon him. He was
wheezing like an old machine.
When he read newspaper reports
on measures to beat this year's
fog, he decided on his doctor's ad-
vice, to leave Stamford Hill for a
few weeks. It was not love of Zion
but dread of the London fog that
brought him to Israel.
