Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi Creates Stir
,
ii ttn Plans to Marr y French Convert

JERUSALEM—It's not that the
engagement was announced with-
out benefit of a matchmaker, but
the nine children and 50 grand-
children of ultra-Orthodox leader
Rabbi Amram Blau disapprove of
his choice for a bride.
She is a French divorcee, a Cath-
olic convert to Judaism, and at 42,
is 30 years his junior.
Rabbi Blau, a widower for less
than a year, plans to marry the
French redhead a day after the
first anniversary of his first wife's
death.
As a leader of the fanatical
Naturei Karta sect, Rabbi Blau
has fought for years against Sab-
bath desecration by leading his
followers in stoning cars on the
Sabbath and other such actions
they feel are against Jewish laws
of propriety.
His fiancee was a fanatical
Catholic until the Nazi occupation
of France, when her sorrow for
the plight of the Jews became such
that she converted to Judaism. Her
husband protested, so she divorced
him and migrated to Israel with
her son.
She joined the religious fanatics,
performing many services for them,
such as smuggling out of the coun-
try a Jewish boy the Naturei Karta

Religious Party Rages
During Knesset Debate
on Coalition Sabbath Bill

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A stiff
fight inside Israel's coalition gov-
ernment, over a government-
sponsored bill that would amend
the law regarding Sabbath obser-
vance, developed openly in the
Knesset, Israel's Parliament.
The National Religious Party, a
member of the coalition, was so
outraged by the draft that it an-
nounced in the Knesset it would
not even consent to debate the
measure.
Under the new formula, as de-
vised by the government, the draft
would state in general terms that
the Sabbath law is applicable to
all business premises "except
those which, according to present
practice, are open and operating
on rest days, as decided by a min-
isterial committee."
Dr. Yosef Burg, minister of so-
cial welfare, denounced the new
formula as "a law of profanation
of the Sabbath." He charged
Mapai with distorting a coalition
agreement on the subject.
The current Knesset was due to
end Thursday. It is now doubtful
whether the draft on Sabbath ob-
servance will be brought up again
before the Knesset adjourns for
the summer. The government sec-
retary in the Knesset said that the
new formula represents a com-
promise between the views of
Ahdut Avodah and NRP ministers.

ceremony. The source for this is
usually traced to the Zohar (Tik-
kune Zohar, 10) where some sort
of mystic reason is inferred in the
standing position of the people
who witness the ceremony. Some
claim that the standing position
of those who are assembled fills
them all with a spirit of holiness.
Basically, the pronouncement of
blessings requires a standing posi-
tion both on the part of the one
who pronounces the blessings and
on the part of those who are offi-

cially assembled to hear the bless-
ings. Thus, practically all those
parts in the prayers in which
blessings are made, require a
standing position. Some claim that
a standing position is required be-
cause, especially in the second set
of blessings, the people of Israel as
a whole are blessed and thus those
in attendance are actually receiv-
ing a blessing and so they are

obliged to stand just as anyone
who is receiving a blessing—such

as the congregation when the
Kohanim offer the priestly bene-
diction. There are some who claim
that the people stand as a tribute
to the bridegroom since on his
wedding day he is likened to a
king and it is required to stand in
the presence of a king.

Why do some people observe
the tradition of having the at-
tendants in the wedding proces-

sion carry candles in their
march down the aisle to the
canopy?
Many authorities have explained
a number of customs which are
practiced during the wedding
ceremony to the Revelation of the
Law at Mount Sinai. That his-
toric occasion served to join the
Almighty and his people in a spiri-
tual bond. Similarly does the mar-
riage between man and wife create
a spiritual bond between two
heavenly souls. Since there were
flashes of lightning during the
Revelation at Sinai, there are can-
dles in the wedding procession
and during the ceremony to re-
mind us of the lightning at Sinai.
Generally speaking it Was cus-
tmary to light candles at every
Jewish ceremonial function (e. g.
circumsicion, funeral, etc.) Many
claim that the lit candle indicates
the presence of the Almighty who
is always with us, or that the can-
dle represents the soul of man
which has biblically been describ-
ed as the "candle of God."
