In Tribute to Adlai Stevenson Reprinted from Aug. 1, 1952, Issue of The Jewish News Background of a Name Adilai Father of Shaphat Who Lived in David's Time By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ There is nothing mysterious about the first name of the Democratic candidate for President Ad'lai — in Hebrew it is spelled ayin, daled, lamed, yud — with the kamentz in the second syllable pronounced sephardically ay and ashkenna- zically oy. Since Mr. Stevenson spells his name with an ai, the sephardic pronounciation is the correct one. The name Ad'lai appears in the 29th verse of the 27th chapter of the First Book of Chronicles. Here is the Hebrew text and the English translation. n• .1=4 itztt - , * crtV,; 111 ' ;17.7 , . 1 -7 47V4' tr#77 1 7 4;111 4 mptrr'.311 'me . c'71, 7 7;11 - 1 Utt Tr. "And over the herds that fed in Sharon was Shirtai the Sharonite; and over the herds that were in the valleys was Shaphat the son of Adlai." This reference to Adlai was in the year 2720 on the Hebrew calendar (1040 B.C.)-2992 years ago. The meaning of "Adlai" as given in the Biblical Con- cordance is lax, or weary. Nowhere else, however, could we locate anything either to substitute or to disprove these inter- pretations. Shaphat mean to rule or judge, Adlai's son, Shaphat, having been one of King David's governors of a province. Stevenson was given his first name by his paternal grandfather, who was Vice President in Grover Cleveland's second administration and who acquired his name from a forefather on his mother's side, Adlai Osborne. On Sept. 3, 1892, Harper's Weekly, New York, publish- ed this advertisement, referring to the 1952 Presidential can- didate's grandfather: PERSONAL.. THE glCell name ADLAI, which many people who do not read the Bible became familiar with for the first time when :Mr STEVENSON was nominated at Chicago, and which is in very infrequent use in this country, has been a favorite appellation in the STEVENSON family, and is now borne by several members besides the Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate. They spell it ADLEY, however, which represents the modern 'pronunciation of the word better.than the regu- lar orthography's-and is entitled to consideration if Professor FR A Nk•fs J. Ben-Gurion's Faction Asks Independent Recognition (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) JERUSALEM — Former Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and six other Mapai members of Parlia- ment who belong to the party's minority group who broke away from Premier Eshkol's leadership Tuesday asked Knesset Speaker Kaddish Luz for formal recogni- tion as a separate faction to be known as the "Israel Workers List." In addition to Ben-Gurion, the other Knesset members of the new list are former Development Min- ister YoSef Almogi, former Deputy Defense Minister Shimon Peres, Y. Smilansky, Chana Ladman, A. Dagani and G. Ben-Israel. It is understood that former Agricul- ture Minister Moshe Dayan who had earlier supported Ben-Gurion in his leadership struggle with Premier Eshkol, had declined to join the new list. A Mapai Party spokesman, while expressing regret over the group's decision to go ahead with the formation of a separate list, said that the party would not oppose recognition of the group when the matter is brought before the Knes- set house committee. With the loss of the seven Knes- set members from the ranks of Mapai, the coalition remains with only 60 members in the 120-mem- ber house, but expected support from Mapam and from one Min Hayesod member, Y. Kessel, will give the government a close but working majority. It is understood that an agree- ment has been reached between Mapai and Min Hayesod, the group of supporters of former Defense Minister Pinhas Lavon who left Mapai, whereby two Min Hayesod candidates will appear in relative- ly secure positions on the Mapai- Achdut Avoda joint list in the forthcoming Knesset elections. Another coalition faction, the National Religious Party, Tuesday charged the Achdut Avoda cabinet ministers with obstructing the passage of the Sabbath bill despite a coalition agreement on the bill's contents, and warned that it will take extreme measures to ensure that the bill is brought before the Knesset in its original version. It is assumed that unless an agree- ment is reached the NRP may retaliate by voting against the government on crucial votes ex- pected with regard to other bills. * * * TEL AVIV — Deputy Prime Minister Abbe a Eban accused the David Ben-Gurion faction of Mapai, which announced that it was offi- cially committed to run an "Israel Workers List" in the next elections Anti-Jewish Pamphlets Sold in Boston at 'God an d Country' Rally • BOSTON (JTA) — Anti-Jewish by Gerald L. Addressing a Mapai meeting at Rehovot, Eban said: "The gravity of what the secessionists have done to Mapai lies not only in the fact that they left their party, but in their abandonment of the basic principles of democracy—majority' decision." He referred to the fact that Mapai's central committee had supported the party's secretariat in ruling that no member of Mapai could retain membership if he par- ticipated in the formation of a list to oppose the Mapai list in the forthcoming elections. At the same time, former Deputy Defense Minister Shimon Peres told a group of Ben-Gurion followers at Beersheba: "Israeli citizens are being educated to con- formism. We want changes in Israeli society. We are not forming a Mapai in reverse, we are not constituting a retroactive Herut, we are not a Stalinist Mapam. We are an Israeli party, the cleanest party in Israel. We have no feel- ings of revenge but of faith, though Mapai in fact deposed Ben-Gurion, who is the greatest living Jew." •......... .. - .... . e.•••• ;,q, .. .•..........
