Englishman Suspected
of Setting Fire to
London Synagogue
LONDON (JTA) —Aubrey Des-
mond Cadogan, an Englishman de-
scribed as a "company director,"
was charged with arson and break-
ing and entering a place of wor-
ship for his alleged role in setting
fire to a synagogue in Southgate,
a suburb of London, last week.
Rabbi Joseph Shaw, spiritual
leader of the synagogue, said that
the fire was "obviously the work
of the so-called Ku Klux Klan or
some similar element."
Damage to the building was
light, as firemen arrived on the
scene and succeeded in putting out
the blaze shortly after it had
begun. Police said that gasoline
had been poured through a win-
dow and reported they had found
an empty gas can.
No details on how police man-
aged to capture the alleged per-
petrator of the fire were re-
leased. The police objected to
bail being granted to Cadogan
for fear of a recurrence of anti-.
Semitic incidents. In remanding
Cadogan to police custody for a
week, the Judge called the deed
" a sacrilege."
The attacks on Jewish property
in the London area will be raised
in Commons Friday by Conserva-
tive M.P. Quintin Hogg, who will
inquire as to how many cases have
been reported to the police and in
how many of the cases proceed-
ings have been brought.
Court Rules on Case;
German Is a Jew if
Born of Jewish Mother
BERLIN (JTA)—The question
of who is a Jew has been decided
here as far as German law is con-
cerned. The Supreme Administra-
tive Court of West Germany ruled
that a German is a Jew if born of
a Jewish mother.
The case involved an unidenti-
fied Jewish emigrant who re-
turned to West Berlin after World
War II, and was asked by the
Jewish community of Berlin to pay
community taxes. The man, who
has since left Berlin and is now
living in Italy, claimed that he
was not a member of the Jewish
community since he had broken
his ties with Judaism and now
professed atheism.
The court ruling upheld the
Jewish community's laws and a
Prussian law of 1847 that defines
membership in religious denomi-
nations. The ruling also held that
every member of a community
has the right to make an official
declaration of withdrawal, but
added that the man in question
had known of this and had not
exercised the right. The court's
ruling is final, not subject to
appeal.
