The Michigan Ad Hoc Commit- tee on the Human Rights and Geno- cide Treaties this week asked President Johnson to give concrete expression of support to the prin- ciples of the United Nations and to the world wide observance of International Cooperation Year, by urging Senate ratification of the three Human Rights Treaties and the Genocide Convention, an- nounced Dr. Tracy Pullman, chair- man of the committee. The Human Rights Treaties deal with the abolition of certain as- pects of slavery, forced labor, and the promotion and protection of the political rights of women. The Genocide Convention makes pun- ishable the physical extermination of national, ethnic, racial, and re- ligious groups. Dr. Pullman pointed out that, in 1963, President Kennedy urged Senate ratification of the Human Rights Treaties. The United Nations adopted the Genocide Convention in 1949 while the horror of the mass murder of millions of civilians, including 6 million Jews, was still fresh in the minds of the civilized world. De- spite President Truman's enthusias- tic endorsement and the favorable recommendation of a special Sen- ate subcommittee (1950), the U. S. Senate has never considered the Genocide Convention. All four treaties have been rati fied by the overwhelming majority of UN member nations. The Michigan Ad Hoc Committee on the Human Rights and Genocide Treaties was formed in December, 1964. Its 24 affiliated member or- ganizations include Catholic, Jew- ish and Protestant religious groups, as well as a host of civic organiza- tions. The committee is planning a pub- lic conference in the fall, to call attention to the need for U. S. ratification of these treaties. Members - of the executive board include Donald Hill, vice chairman; Earl Mandel, secretary; Meta Rise- man, treasurer; Alvin Kushner, Rev. James Bristah, Rev. Donald Schroeder and Father James Macy.
