Australian Jewish General Honored by Centennial Vandalism Mounts in W. Germany, Argentina (Continued from Page I) the vandals were "either stupid or criminal." The culprits are still at large in spite of rewards for their capture totaling 20,000 deuts- chemarks ($4,000). Interior Minister Hermann Hoer- cherl announced in the Bundestag, the lower house of Parliament, that the government would present documentation on the criminals who smeared the Jewish cemetery and synagogue monument in Bam- berg two weeks ago. The Minister said the documentation would make it clear that the German people as a whole had nothing to do with the desecrations and de- tested them. He also told the Bundestag that the federal government had in- structed the Central Criminal Of- fice to investigate the Bamberg smearings, considered the worst such vandalism in postwar Ger- many. He said that he had asked the Ministers of the Interior of the West German states to report all such desecrations to the federal Central Criminal Office. New desecrations of West Ger- man cemeteries erupted last week in the wake of the anti-Semitic smearings of the Bamberg ceme- tery and a monument to the Bam- berg Jewish synagogue razed by Nazis in 1938. Another incident involving the smearing of Nazi emblems on a Bamberg monument was reported Wednesday. City gardeners found the local athletic monument daub- ed with a swastika and such slo- gans as "death to the Jews" and "to the gallows with the Jew accomplice Erhard." Unknown vandals desecrated the Jewish cemetery near Koblenz, and rose bushes and flower pats were overturned and uprooted at the Jewish cemetery in Weissenthurm. Rewards of 5,000 marks ($1,700) were offered by local officials, and police began a search for the van- dals. Dr. Ludwig Martin, the fed- eral prosecutor general, announc- ed in Karlsruhe, he had begun an investigation to determine whether to take action in the Bamberg desecrations. The German Jewish weekly, the Allgemeine Wochenzeitung, said that the new wave of anti- Semitic actions indicated that po- tential murderers still lived in West Germany and that it was not true that an unmistakable change in basic German atti- tudes toward Jews had taken place at broad levels. The week- ly said that among the contribu- tory causes for the latest inci- dents was the reawakening in West Germany of "national con- sciousness" which was now being courted by politicians for votes, as well as the fact that Ger- many's Nazi past was no longer being condemned as outrightly as it was ten years ago. * * * DUESSELDORF (J T A) — A FENCE Nobody UNDERSELLS GREAT LAKES DON'T EVER FORGET IT!! ASK FOR "Morrie Sherman" Sales Manager Great Lakes Fence 16540 GREENFIELD BR 3-2900 warning that apathy and indiffer- ence by Germans in the face of re- newed anti-Semitic vandalism and abuse of freedom of the press by certain publications to incite to anti-Semitism could lead to the abolition of constitutional rights, was issued by the Central Council of Jews in Germany. In an official statement issued at the conclusion of its annual meet- ing, the Council said that recent acts of vandalism directed against Jews were disrupting "peaceful co- existence" between Jews and Ger- mans. All Jewish communities in West Germany and Berlin were represented at the meeting. The Council statement said that those who survived the holocaust and the witnesses of the criminal persecution by the Third Reich "have a duty before history to raise their voices." National Socialism, the statement pointed out. succeed- ed in Germany not because of the strength of its extremist propon- ents but because of the weakness and apathy of those who should have defended the state. Today the question must be raised, the state- ment concluded, whether the mis- use of the freedom of the press by certain publications "could not awaken instincts of the past which one day could lead to the aboli- tion of constitutional rights." In a poll conducted by the Wick- ert Institute in Tuebingen, 84 per cent of the respondents asked about the latest series of anti- Semitic incidents spoke out against the vandalism while 16 per cent expressed no opinion. Argentine Parliament Criticized for Inaction BUENOS AIRES (JTA) — The Argentine Parliament was criticiz- ed for lack of reaction to anti- Jewish activities in Argentina at a luncheon sponsored by DAIA, central representative body of Ar- gentine Jewry, which was attended by members of all factions in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies. Dr. Isaac Goldenberg, DAIA president, told the luncheon guests that those who should act against such activities were "rationalizing" the situation by blaming "irrespon- sible" youths for the anti-Jewish incidents. He warned that the people were astonished by the "im- munity and nonchalance" of the perpetrators of the acts and con- cerned over the lack of response by Parliament. Dr. Arturo Mor Roig, president of the Chamber of Deputies, reply- ing, stressed the responsibility of a democratic society to deal with such problems. Argentine Vice President Carlos Perette declared, in a message to the luncheon, that Argentine President Illia had said that his Government "would not tolerate divisions or discrimina- tions based on race, color, creed or religion." Interior Minister Juan Pal- mer° announced that he had asked Justice and Education Minister Alconada Aramburu to instruct government attorneys to prosecute the left-wing Tacuara movement for published state- ments tending to incite to viol- ence and delinquency. Orders for similar actions were sent to the Governors of Santa Fe, Bue- nos Aires, Entre Rios, Tucuman and Salta. A leader of the local nationalist movement, the Tacuara, charged at a press conference that "systematic assaults" were being committed against Tacuara members by "Zion- ist storm troops." The charge was made by Emilio Berra, commander of the Buenos Aires zone Tacuara, which is not identical with the left-wing movement of the same name banned by the Government after a series of open threats against Argentine Jewry. Berra charged that one of the evtish National 18414 WYOMING attacks took place in Buenos Aires when four Tacuara "youngsters" were assaulted by 15 to 20 men using hard objects. Berra said that the father of one of the Tacuara youths was hit in the eye and that he may lose it. He said that the injured youths were taken to a hospital and that one of the assail- ants, identified as Adniel Alberto Spival, 22, was detained by police. _ Berra presented to reporters several youths, aged 17 to 18, who showed alleged gunshot wounds which Berra said were inflicted on them during an attack on another Buenos Aires street corner. A delegation of the DATA, head- ed by Goldenberg, was received by Argentine Interior Undersecretary Jose L. Vesco. The delegation des- cribed to the official recent ex- tremist anti-Jewish activities in Argentina. A leader of the Tacuara move- ment, which was banned by the government but continues to operate, told a press conference that the movement was "mor- tally anti-Zionist" and would fight Zionism with guns if necessary. The statement was made by Patricio Erreculdte Pueyrredon, national secretary, in the ab- sence of Jose Bazter, its leader, who is now visiting Communist China. The secretary said that the movement has some 200 fol- lowers in and around Buenos Aires and that it was training youths in paramilitary tactics. He said the movement was strongly "anti-Yankee" but that "we are not Jew-hunters, nor are we yearning for the Third Reich" of Germany. He said the movement was not concerned with Jews, "ex- cept when they are Zionists." He emphasized the movement's "soli- darity" with the Arab world and said it favored the rettu-n to power in Argentina of deposed dictator Juan Peron.
