Barr re- tired from his post as assistant associate general counsel of the Veterans Administration in Oc- tober, 1954, to assume office as the national commander of the Jewish War Veterans for the year 1954-55. A member of the Bar of Massa- chusetts and of the District of Col- umbia, he was on the staff of National University School of Law as an instructor on federal laws relating to military service. An Army veteran of World War I, Mr. Barr served the Jewish War Veterans of the USA as na- tional judge advocate in 1934-45. He was a member of the National Committee on Observance of Vet- erans' Day. He had the longest continuity of service as an elected member of JWV's national executive com- mittee and was a member of the executive committee of the Na- tional Community Relations Ad- visory Council. Mr. Barr had been chairman of the Washington, D.C. Armed Ser- vices Committee of the Jewish Welfare Board for over 14 years. He was first vice president of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Washington, a member of the American Legion for 35 years and a member of the Post Mortem Club in Washington, D.C. Chairman of the government division of UJA of Greater Wash- ington for 14 years, he was a mem- ber of the executive committee of the National Conference of Chris- tians and Jews, of the Community Chest and of the UJA. He was a member of the board of direct- ors of the Hebrew Home for the Aged and of the Jewish Social Service Agency. Mr. Barr was na- tional administrator of the Jewish War Veterans from November 1955 until August 1959, at which time he was appointed national executive director, from which position he retired March 31, 1964. Born in Poland, Mr. Barr was brought to this country at age 4. Reared in Boston, he received his law degree at Boston University. Sol Kanat, co-owner and assis- tant secretary of Food Fair Mar- kets, died Monday at age 63. Mr. Kanat, 12767 Lin- coin, Huntington Woods, was a De- troit area resi- dent 45 years. He was born in Rus- sia. A member of Cong. Shaarey Zedek, he be- longed to Oak Park Lodge, F&AM, Bereznit- Kanat zer Aid Society, Histadrut and Labor Zionist Organization. Mr. Kanat also was chairman of divi- sions of several Israel Bond drives and a member of the Supermarket Institute. Survivors are his wife Helen; a son, Dr. Irvin; a daughter, Mrs. Walter (Evelyn) Hoffman; and six grandchildren.
