Maurice Zeiger Dead at Age 54 •
Stricken at Bnai Brith Installation

Detroit Bnai Brith leader Mau-
rice Zeiger died Wednesday night.
He was stricken with a heart attack
and died immediately after his in-
troduction as toastmaster for a
Bnai Brith Men's Council installa-
tion dinner at Temple Israel.
Mr. Zeiger, 54, was third vice
president of Dis-

past president of
both the Greater
D etroit Coun-
cil and Oak-
Woods Lodge.

Dr. Helen Hirsch, a frequent
contributor to The Jewish News,
author of many features about
Jewish personalities and issues,
died Saturday in Jersey City at
the age of 68.
A native of Vienna, she had
been an interpreter for the Aus-
trian Court of Justice in English,
German, French, Italian, Spanish
and Latin. She came to this coun-
try in 1938.
She received her Ph D at the
University of Vienna in 1922. She
had served as a columnist for the
New York Sun and wrote for
many newspapers. She was feature
editor of the Jersey City Jewish
Standard from 1955 to 1964.
She was secretary of the Na-
tional Council of Young Israel
from 1951 to 1964. She was the
author of three books: "The Badge
of Sufferance," "World Famous
Jewish Magicians," and "Suesskind
of Trimberg."

Samuel Lebowitz Dies

Samuel H. Lebowitz, 62, sales
manager for the Hamilton Fish
Co. 28 years, died June 19. He
lived at 20224 Mansfield.
Born in McKeesport, Pa., he
lived here 42 years and belonged
to Cong. Bnai Moshe and Bnai
Brith.
Mr. Lebowitz leaves his wife
Cele; a son, Lawrence R.: a daugh-
ter, Mrs. Hy (Sally) Levine; a
brother, Max of Pittsburgh; two
sisters, Mrs. Jean Drooker of Nan-
tasket, Mass., and Mrs. Ruth Fa-
bian • of Pittsburgh; and three
grandchildren.

Producer Selznick
Dead at Age 63

HOLLYWOOD -Movie producer
David 0. Selznick, whose "Gone
With the Wind" has achieved the
highest honors in film history,
died Tuesday at
ge 63.
He was the first
producer to win
the Academy
Award two suc-
cessive years -
for "Gone With
the Wind" and
"Rebecca," a n d
he introduced
such stars as In-
Selznick grid Bergman,
Katherine Hepburn, Gregory Peck,
Clark Gable and Jennifer Jones,
Mr. Selznick's wife. She was with
him at the time of his fatal heart
attack Tuesday.
Born in Pittsburgh, he was the
son of Lewis J. Selznick, a Russian
immigrant who earned and lost a
fortune in the movie business.
Before marrying Jennifer Jones,
he was married to Irene Mayer,
daughter of producer Louis B.
Mayer.

Sadye Rosenblatt, head account-
ant for the Macomb County De-
partment of Welfare 31 years, died
June 19 at age 53. Mrs. Rosen-
blatt, 206 1/2 Cass, Mount Clemens,
lived in that area 48 years. She
was born in Elmira, N.Y.
A member of Cong. Beth Tefilas
Moses, she belonged to the sister-
hood and to ORT (Organization
for Rehabilitation Through Train-
ing).
A sister, Mrs. Philip (Beatrice)
Blaize, survives.

Grocer Ben Banks Dies

David D. Roland, president and
founder 33 years ago of the Ameri-
can Carpet Co., 846 W. McNichols,
died Tuesday. He was 56.
A native Detroiter, Mr. Roland,
31740 Franklin Fairway, Farming-
ton, attended Northern High
School and the University of Cal-
ifornia, graduating from the De-
troit College of Law.
A real estate owner, he was a
member of Temple Beth El and
was co-chairman of its cemetery
commission and vice chairman of
the properties committee.
He leaves his wife, Rynee; a son,
Richard; a brother, Bernard Roth-
enberg; and two sisters, Mrs.
Jeanette Stewart Fink and Mrs.
Aubrey (Hilda) Ettenheimer.

Benjamin Banks, 17584 Cherry-
lawn, died Thursday at age 57. A
