Developer Jack Shenkman Announces
First Dual-Role Shopping Center

Harvard Row, a new concept in
shopping centers, was announced
for Southfield, with the National
Bank of Southfield and Borman
Food Stores, operating Food Fair
of Michigan, as the center's first
tenants.
Jack Shenkman— who developed
Livonia Mall, the huge indoor-mall
shopping center at Seven Mile and
Middlebelt in Livonia—announced
the new center which was designed
by Detroit architect Wah Yee.
He described Harvard Row as a
dual-purpose shopping center, "De-
signed to serve the need for con-
venience shopping while also pro-
viding high-quality specialty shops
in the trade area."
Location of the proposed 70,000-
square-foot center is the northeast
corner of the intersection of 11
Mile Rd. and Lahser.
Shenkman said that the National

Bank of Southfield and Food Fair
have already leased space.
The bank, established just 18
months ago, will maintain its
main executive offices and also
operates a branch at Harvard
Row. The branch — the bank's
fourth — will feature a complete
line of services, including a
drive-in facility.
Shenkman noted that exhaustive
retail studies indicated Harvard
Row will serve a high-income pop-
ulation of more than 20,000 persons
within a four-mile radius, by 1970.
He added that Harvard Row will
be the first dual-role small shop-
ping center in the northwest Detroit
area, catering to both convenience
and specialty-shop merchandising.
Ground will be broken for the
construction of Harvard Row later
this month. It will take approxi-
mately four months to build the
center on the seven-acre site.
