`The Pawnbroker'-Art Out of Harlem Rhoda Cohen Married
"The Pawnbroker" is not a
pretty film—it is a shocking, ter-
rifying slice of life. But it happens
to be a superb motion picture.
Its Detroit premiere, in a show-
ing before a selected group of Bnai
Brith members, left a deep im-
pression—as well • as depression.
The Ely Landau production is not
a film one easily forgets.
Based on the book by the late
Edward Wallant, the movie is a
tribute to the author — from the
script on down through the direc-
tion (Sidney Lumet), photography
and acting.
Rod Steiger delivers perhaps his
finest • performance yet as the
haunted Harlem pawnbroker Sol
Nazerman, a survivor of the Nazi
terror in Germany who cannot for-
get that "everything I loved is
dead."
As he goes through the motions
of living, he is oblivious to the

sorrows and needs of others—
what he calls "the scum"—who
come to his shop with the rem-
nants of their own broken lives.
In rapid flashbacks, the camera
looks into Nazerman's mind, the
idyl of a summer day before the
Nazis came to take him, his pretty
young wife, parents and children
to their destruction. His lack of
feeling for those around him
masks the horrors of concentra-
tion camp memories, and his cus-
tomers know him only as "a hard
man" who wears a peculiar num-
ber on his arm.
Jaime Sanchez got the break of
his young life with this film, por-
traying a Puerto Rican slum youth
who works for Nazerman. How
the boy's own tragedy finally
breaches the wall Nazerman has
built for himself makes for a grip-
ping, tear-jerking climax that
makes the film a work of art.
The camera pulled no punches
in showing New York's worst side,
including the remnant of hatred
for the "kyke," the money lender,
who commutes from his suburban
home to make a living. But it
also shows there can be a "good
boy" in Harlem. It shows that Nazi
Germany didn't have a corner on
the brutality market. And it shows
that even the Jew can pretend- not
to see the injustices going on
around him. —C. H.
* * *
"The Pawnbroker" leaves the
viewer dazed. It is an overwhelm-
ing production. Its tensions pass on
to. the audience, and its ferocity
is challenging.
The impact of the pawnbroker's
inheritance of the shocking vi-
sions of brutality left upon his
heart and soul by the Nazi cruel-
ties he has suffered, his endless
thoughts about his wife and chil-
dren who were victims of the Hit-
ler murderers, the manner in
which he himself had become hard-
ened, make the theme realistic,
even in its most morbid portions.
Taking into account the experi-
ences that are reflected from the
numerals on the pawnbroker's
wrist, the haunting that accom-
panies him at every step in his life
in the Harlem area where the film
was made, the viewer begins to
appreciate that there is genuine
motivation in the ie that has been
directed with so much skill by Sid-
ney Lumet.
Brilliant acting, splendid photo-
graphic effects, the excellence of
the direction done by Lumet from
a wheelchair, make "The Pawn-
broker" one of the very great films
of our time. —P. S.
