Anna Kavafian and Rita Sloan Win
Center Competition for Violin, Piano

Two young ladies—one a pianist
from Oak Park and the other a
violinist from Royal Oak—were
named this week winners of the
Jewish Center's Competition for
violin and piano.
The winners are 17-year-old vio-
linist Anna Kavafian, 3022 Glen-
view, Royal Oak, and pianist Rita
Sloan, 21, of 22040 Stratford, Oak
Park.
As winners, the musicians
will each receive a $200 cash
award from the Friends of the
Center Symphony, and will per-
form their winning pieces as
soloists with the Center Sym-
phony Orchestra at a concert
Nov. 16.
Miss Kavafian was named best
violinist in the competition for her
rendition of the Khatchaturian
Concerto. Miss Sloan's winning
number was Chopin's Andante
Spianato and Grande Polonaise
Brilliante.

All contestants were required to
be prepared to perform a full con-
certo, and were judged by panels
headed by Valter Poole, associate
conductor of the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra (for the violin category),
and by Detroit pianist Mischa
Kottler (piano category).
Since 1963, Miss Kavafian has
been a student of Mischa Mischa-
koff, concertmaster of the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra. She plans to
attend a music conservatory after
high school, and would like to
eventually perform with a major
symphony, orchestra.
Miss Sloan was the 1962 winner
of the Bohemian Club's Bendett-
son-Netzorg competition and that
summer appeared as soloist with
the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
With several other musical "tro-
phies' to her credit, Miss Sloan
plans to continue her studies at
Juliard through graduation in

1957.
