Dignitaries Flock to Stratford for Glamour of Theater Festival Openings

STRATFORD, Ont. — The 13th
year of the. Shakespearean Festival
performances proves a lucky one.
The glamor exceeds the previous
years and the visiting dignitaries
are from nearly everywhere.
Many prominent Americans, in-
cluding notables from Michigan,
came here for the opening nights
—for "Henry IV" on Monday,
"Falstaff" (second part of Henry
IV) on Tuesday and "Julius Cae-
sar" Wednesday.
Now the festival is preparing
for the "Figaro" and "Mahog-
onny" operettas which are ex-
pected to add to the glories at-
tained by the festival.

The Fremans and the Bronf-
mans (of Seegram fame) and
many others are here from Ca-
nadian communities, and Jewish
groups from many areas are here
to share in the joys of successful
theatrical management.
Tom Patterson, whose visionary
hope for such a festival soon be-
came reality, is here to gather joy
in the acceptance of his proposals
for such an idea, before settling
with his wife in Ypsilanti where
he will start directing, in 1966, the
Ypsilanti Greek Theater.
Tony van Bridge, as Falstaff, is
the great hero of the festival, and
Joseph Shaw is the remarkable
interpreter of the Julius Caesar
role.
An able Detroit girl, Murial
Greenspon, who figured in per-
formances last year, is in re-
hearsals for "Mahagonny."
A leading member of the New
York City Center Opera Company,
Murial Greenspon made her Cana-
dian debut at Stratford last sum-
mer as Dame Carruthers in "The
Yeomen of the Guard." During
the festival's 1.965 opera season,
she will sing the role of Mrs. Beg-
bick in "Mahagonny." Four years
ago Miss Greenspon was the reci-
pient of the Grinnell Grand Opera
Award and has since appeared at
the Boston Arts Festival, with the
Detroit Symphony, and in the title

role of Ionesco's "The Bald Prima
Donna" at its world premiere in
New York. Following her season
at Stratford last year, Miss Green-
spon returned to the City Center
to sing .Marcellina in "The Mar-
riage of Figaro" and to participate
in a season of 20th-century operas.

Stratford's population has grown
as a result of the increasing in-
terest in the festival and the large
audiences it draws annually, but
the Jewish population remains
static. This year the Jewish fam-
ilies have increased by one—to
15—but the newcomers expect to
return to Windsor soon.
There are few of • marriageable
age in the Jewish community, but
there will be a class of nine boys
and girls starting in September

Bessie Muskat recently . honored a visiting teacher from Kitchener.
When a resident, or a visitor
their parents on their golden wed-
has yahrzeit, the community
drums up a minyan for services,
otherwise the functioning syna-
gogue's services are limited to
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
There no longer are Sabbath or
holiday observances because the
community has declined in numb-
ers and it is difficult to get enough
people to form a regular, Sabbath
