Graduates of Hebrew Schools, Community
Leaders to Attend Isaacs Dinner Wednesday;
Sen. Gruelling to Address JNF Gathering

Graduates of the United Hebrew
Schools dating back 35 years, when
their chief mentor was Bernard
Isaacs. and community leaders rep-
resenting all elements in Jewish
life, will gather next Wednesday,
at the testimonial dinner arranged
by the Jewish National Fund of
Detroit, to honor the distinguished
educator.
Proceeds from the dinner, to be
held at the Shaarey Zedek, will go
to plant a Bernard and Belle
Isaacs Forest on JNF land in
Israel, in appreciation of Mr.
Isaacs' many contributions to-
wards the advancement of Jewish
educational programs, his Zionist
activities and his devotion during
a lifetime to the JNF.
With U. S. Senator Ernest
Gruelling of Alaska as Principal
speaker, the program will be pre-
sided over by Morris Brandwine,
chairman of the dinner conunit-
tee. Participants in the program
will include Abe Kasle, honorary
chairman of the committee, and
Mrs. Joseph H. Ehrlich, who will
make a presentation to Mr.
Isaacs.
Committees representing t h e
alumni and a city wide body of
prominent leaders are completing
arrangements for the dinner.
The Isaacs Forest will be part of
the John F. Kennedy Forest in
Israel.
Reservations for the dinner
can still be made by calling the
JNF office on Wyoming, UN
4-2767. Those attending are ask-
ed to plant a minimum of 25
trees in Israel per couple. The
entire community is asked to join
in honoring Mr. Isaacs by plant-
ing trees in his and Mrs. Isaacs'
honor in the Isaacs Forest.
The guest speaker, Senator
Gruening, a native of New York,
was graduated from Hotchkiss
School in 1903, Harvard College in
1907 and Harvard College of Medi-
cine in 1912.
He was named adviser to the
U. S. delegation to the 7th Inter-
American Conference in Montevi-
deo in 1933, when the Good Neigh-
bor policy was adopted by the U. S.
for Latin America. He was appoint-
ed director of the Division of Ter-
ritories and Island Possessions of
the Department of Interior in 1934,
holding that post until 1939.
From 1935 to 1937 he was ad-
ministrator of the Puerto-Rico Re-
construction Administration and
was a member of the Alaska Inter-
national Hi g h w ay Commission,
1938-1942.
In 1939 he was appointed gov-
ernor of Alaska. He was reappoint-
ed Governor of Alaska twice, serv-
ing until 1953, and in 1955 he de-
livered the keynote address to the
Alaska Constitutional Convention.
He was elected U. S. Senator un-
der the Alaska-Tennessee Plan in
1956 and was re-elected in 1958
and 1962. He has some years to
serve in the Senate—and how for-
tunate that is for the American
people.

Harry Greenstein Dead;
Burial Set in Jerusalem

Harry Greenstein, 20145 Stans-
bury, a Detroit resident 40 years,
died June 3 at age of 69. Burial
was set in Jerusalem.
Mr. Greenstein was the founder
and president of Golden Valley
Dairy. Born in Czechoslovakia, he
was a member of the First Hebrew
Congregation of Delray and a board
member of Cong. Bnai Jacob. He
also was active in many philan-
thropic groups.
He is survived by his wife, Paula;
a son, Seymour; two daughters,
Mrs. Jack (Shirley) Gormezano
and Mrs. Stanley (Jeanette) Green;
a sister, Mrs. Pauline Cohen of
New York; and a brother, Samuel
of Tel Aviv.

Many messages have been re-
ceived by the Jewish National
Fund commending the Detroit
leaders for selecting Mr. Isaacs
for this year's honors, and The
Jewish News is in receipt of
commendations to Mr. Isaacs
from many of the United He-
brew Schools graduates, locally
and in communities in other
states and abroad.
In a lengthy communication
from Israel, where she now re-
sides with her husband and chil-
dren at Kfar Haroe, Doar Hadera,
Shirley Sklash expresses elation
over the honor to be accorded
her former teacher and principal.
Recalling the affections all He-
brew Schools' children had for
Mr. Isaacs, Mrs. Sklash wrote:
