On the eve of the special Maariv service and concert to be
given in his honor at the Shaarey Zedek, next Thursday, Cantor
Jacob H. Sonenklar recalled his visit in Israel a year ago when
he conducted services in Jerusalem's Jeshurun Synagogue in the
presence of Israel President Shneur Zalman Shazar. The photo
shows Cantor Sonenklar conducting the services. President Shazar
is on the extreme left. The Maariv service and concert next Thurs-
day will present all Detroit cantors, the Shaarey Zedek choir led by
Don Frohman and Israel Fuchs and music specially composed for
the synagogue by a noted choir. Rabbis Leon Frain, Benjamin
Gorrelick and Israel I. Halpern will bring greetings from the Syna-
gogues of the city. Samuel Krohn, recently elected president of the
Jewish Community Council, will represent all of the organizations
that the cantor has served over the year. The president and execu-
tive vice president of the Cantors Assembly of America, cantors
Saul Meisels and Samuel Rosenbaum, will fly in to extend the greet-
ings of the cantors of the United States. Rabbi Irwin Groner of
Shaarey Zedek together with the president, Lou Berry, will pay
tribute to Cantor Sonenklar on behalf of the congregation. Proceeds
will go toward publication of new music for the synagogues of
America in Cantor Sonenklar's honor.
