Addressing a rally of 3,000 members of the Mapai minority in a grove outside Natanya, Dayan said: "This is not a meeting to confirm a split. It is not a meet ing to seek a split. But one should not go around with eyes closed to the possibility of a party split." The meeting adopted a resolu- tion against breaking with Mapai but favoring a strong opposition to the present leadership and seek- ing to reinstate Ben-Gurion as prime minister. Ben-Gurion, addressing the meet- ing, told the group that the pres- ent political struggle is "concerned with the disintegration of the moral leadership of the nation. Without this moral leadership," he declared, "our future would be j eopardized." Continued negotiations be- tween minority and majority leaders within the Mapai Party, including talks lasting several hours between Eshkol and Day- an, failed Tuesday to bring about a solution of the broiling leader- ship struggle. The minority faction continued to demand that Ben-Gurion head both the Mapai list for the forth- coming parliamentary elections and the next government. The majority stands firm for an ar- rangement under which Eshkol will be premier and Ben-Gurion would head the Mapai list. The Mapai Center planned to meet Thursday to conclude its dis- discussion on the composition of the Mapai-Ahdut Avodah joint list. The decision was expected to be that the center would agree that Eshkol should be the next premier. Earlier in the negotiations aimed at healing the rift between sup- porters of Premier Eshkol and former Premier Ben-Gurion, it was reported that Eshkol was ready to propose ministerial portfolios for leaders of the minority Ben-Gurion faction in the next cabinet. These would include Dayan, former Deputy Defense Minister Shimon Peres and Mayor Abba Khoushy. Consideration of such a proposal, however, would have to await the decision by the central committee as to who will head the list and who will be the Mapai candidate for the premiership. Antique Ceremonial Items Shown at World's Fair NEW YORK—A collection of an- tique Jewish works of art and cere- monial objects used during the more than 300 years of Jewish set- tlement in America, went on dis- play this week at the educational exhibition of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America at the World's Fair. Included in the display are a number of religious ceremonial items brought over from Spain which were specially designed for the secret worship by Marranos during the centuries following the Spanish Inquisition when public Jewish worship was forbidden. Brandeis University announced the appointment of distinguished actor-director MORRIS CARNOV- SKY to its theater arts depart- ment faculty and simultaneously disclosed plans to establish a graduate program in theater arts. Carnovsky will join the faculty in September as adjunct professor of theater arts and will annually direct two professionally cast plays in Brandeis' Nate B. and Frances Spingold Theater Arts Center, which will be dedicated on June 11.
