Beth Yehudah's Young Men to Mark Sinai Anniversary With All-Night Vigil The 400-member student body of Yeshiva Beth Yehudah will not sleep Saturday night. At the Northwest center of the school, 17376 Wyoming, and at the Oak Park branch, 15400 W. Ten Mile, young men from age 12 to 24 will be observing an all-night vigil of Torah study in commemor- ation of the reverence of God at Sinai, some 3,500 years ago. Saturday is the eve of the Jew- ish Festival of Pentecost, which is a Greek word meaning "the 50th." When the children of Israel were preparing to depart from Egypt in the great Exodus, they were informed by Moses that they would have to tarry in the - wilder- ness for a period of seven times seven days, after which they would receive the Torah at Mt. Sinai. So eager were the children of Israel to receive the Law of God that they counted each day of the seven weeks. Finally on the 50th day (Pentecost), which was a Sabbath, Moses ascended the mountain, and the heavens split open, yielding the immortal Commandments. In commemoration of these events, the all-night vigil on the night of Pentecost has become part of Jewish tradition. Pentecost is a season for re- flection and rededication to the principles of Torah and to the laws and ethical and oral teach- ings that Judaism has brought to the world. is in his honor that the Book of 66 elected Marsha Kaplan, re- cording secretary, and Douglas Ruth is read on this festival.
