Jewish Community Council Backs
Relations Commission Against Foes

Dr. Samuel Krohn, president of
the Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit, announced
that the executive committee has
authorized and urged Council op-
position to any action which would
impair the life of Detroit's Com-
mission on Community Relations.
Dr. Krohn's statement, sent to
a number of Council-affiliated or-
ganizations, was prompted by cur-
rent efforts aimed at abolishing
the city's official human relations
agency.
Dr. Krohn noted that since 1943,
"the Commission on Community
Relations has functioned effective-
ly as a vehicle for resolving prob-
lems and reducing tensions within
the community. In our opinion,
elimination of the Commission
would be a serious blow to the
steady and peaceful progress De-
troit has achieved in the area of
human relations."

dents. Realistically, however, the
continuing development of sound
intergroup r e l a t i o n s anywhere
within the Detroit metropolitan
area affects all residents of the
area."
Accompanying Dr. Krohn's an-
nouncement was a position state-
ment opposing the Civic Council
efforts adopted by the Coordinat-
ing Council on Human Relations,
representing 74 denominational,
racial and civic organizations in
greater Detroit.
Walter Klein is chairman of the
Coordinating Council.

Every man feels instinctively
that all the beautiful sentiments in
the world weigh less than a single
lovely action. —Lowell

Plans for a campaign seeking
repeal of the ordinance which
created the Community Rela-
tions Commission were recently
announced by spokesmen of the
Nationwide Civic Council. The
Civic Council represents group-
ings similar to those which sup-
ported the "Homeowner's Rights
Ordinance" adopted by Detroit
voters. The Jewish Community
Council vigorously opposed the
Homeowner's ordinance when it
appeared on the municipal bal-
lot last September.

In urging that community groups
alert their respective member-
ships to this effort to eliminate
the Commission, Dr. Krohn noted
that "technically the issue is one
which affects only Detroit resi-
