Dr. Lewin-Epstein, Dental Pioneer in Israel, Succumb s at Age 76 REHOVOTH—Dr. Samuel Lewin- Epstein, prominent dentist and son of a founder of this city, died at Hadassah Hospital at age 76. Dr. Lewin-Epstein, whose death followed by two months that of his wife Madeline, was the first president of the Palestine Dental Association and was an initiator of the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine. Born in Warsaw, Dr. Lewin-Ep- stein came to Palestine as an in- fant, later moving with his family to America, where he was grad- uated in 1915 from the New York School of Dentistry. He was back in Palestine on a State Department relief mis- 'on during World War II, and listi 1918 returned as a member of the American Zionist Medical Unit. His wife-to-be, a nursing sister in the unit, later would help found Hadassah's nursing school. In 1946, Dr. Lewin-Epstein was made a fellow of the International College of Dentists, and 10 years later received a Scroll of Honor from Hebrew University. Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity also paid tribute to him. During the Mandate, he was fre- quently called upon for advice and helped draft professional legisla- tion by the British authority, serv- ing as consultant to the Trans-Jor- dan Frontier Force. He is survived by a son, Dr. Jacob Lewin-Epstein, director of the department of oral surgery in the Hebrew U. dental school, Franz Kobler, Lawyer, Jewish Scholar, Succumbs in San Francisco at Age 83 By JOSEF FRAENKEL Jewish News Correspondent in London Dr. Franz Kobler, lawyer, schol- ar and historian , died May 12 in San Francisco at age 83. He left friends in London, Jerusalem, New York, wherever interest prevailed for Jewish and Zionist research work. Franz Kobler was born in Mlada Boleslav, Czechoslovakia, in 1882, studied in Prague, Berlin and Vi- enna, where he settled as a law- yer. In Vienna he belonged to the circle of Adolf Boehm, the Zionist historian; Dr. Ernst Mueller, the translator of Bialik into German; and Tulo Nussenblatt, author of some books on Herzl. He publish- ed essays and books on legal questions, among them "Justice and Injustice on Expulsion." In 1933, together with Ernst Mueller he wrote on Plato's Sym- posion. But his main work before the war was "Jews and Judaism in German Letters from Three Centuries." He arrived in London in 1939, and became in the same year a co-founder of the Institute of Jewish Learning, where leading personalities gave lectures regu- larly to guide the audience to the sources of Judaism and to promote Jewish knowledge. He published two important books in London: "Let- ters of Jews through the Ages" and "The Vision was There." In 1947, Kobler left London for America, where he continued his research work.
