It was remarkable that during a crucial time in his own career, just after he was named as a member of the Supreme Court by President Wilson, Mr. Brandeis should have taken the time to write such a long report of a meeting. The article, called "When Mr. Brandeis Met With The Opposi- tion," gives an account of a meet- ing with several groups of Jewish leaders, Mr. Brandeis having taken time to write a letter of seven typewritten pages outlining the points of view of the different op- posing groups. Litke of the Gemil- uth Chassodim Synagogue. The article pertained to many instances whereby mourners and friends leave graveside services before the casket is lowered into the grave. Rabbi Litke even stated the reason for such actions, and has asked the cemetery authorities to, shall we say, offset such actions by appealing to the mourners and friends attending the graveside services. People of the Jewish faith have a tendency of giving way to their emotions, especially when attend- ing graveside services at the cemetery. Far too many of them throw themselves on the ground and other actions that they can- not control due to grief. To uphold the Jewish law is what our obligations are, but rabbis must be somewhat flexible in such delicate matters, and I think it is far better for people to let someone else lower the casket into the grave, than they should stay and watch and leave with an impression that will affect their lives for some time to come. We like to remember our rela- tives and our dear friends as they looked when they were well, and by the same token many many Jews attending graveside services want to leave with the thought in mind that they have fulfilled their obligation and leave after the services without taking with them an impression that can prey on their minds.
