'30,000 Life Terms'
Sought for Nazi as
Prosecution Ends
(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)
FRANKFURT—The prosecution
portion of the trial of 20 former
SS guards at the Auschwitz death
camp was completed Tuesday
with a statement to the jury
court by Henry Ormond, the civil
plaintiff, who asked that two of
the defendants receive multiple
life sentences for their crimes.
The state prosecution was com-
pleted Monday. Defense attorneys
will begin their summations next
week.
Dr. Ormond asked the jury
court to sentence Victor Cape-
sius, the camp pharmacy chief,
/-0 to 30,000 life terms in prison
and Perry Broad to a life term
for each murder proved against
him.
Dr. Ormond called Capesius
"the most diabolical murderer"
at the camp. He charged that
Capesius selected former Jewish
friends for cordial conversations
before sending them to the gas
chambers• He said Capesius regu-
larly took gold teeth, jewelry
and money from the Jewish vic-
tims. He called Broad one of the
most intelligent of the defend-
ants and also one of the most
sadistic.
The prosecution demanded life
terms for 16 of the former camp
officials, life terms with limita-
tions for two others and acquittal
for two for lack of evidence.
The trial began Dec. 20, 1963
and extended through 153 court
sessions, the longest Nazi war
crimes trial in West Germany.
Between 3,000,000 and 4,000,000
victims, most of them Jews, were
put to death in Auschwitz during
the war. Some 360 witnesses have
testified to multiple acts of beat-
ings, torture and murder by the
defendants.
Meanwhile, in Bonn, the arrest
of four former members of one
of the Nazi war-time execution
squads in West Berlin was an-
nounced by the West Berlin Law
Court. Former SS Brigade Leader
Lothar Beutel of West Berlin was
listed as one of the four members
of Einstaztgruppe IV who was ar-
rested. The court said the four
men we-re accused of participat-
ing in mass murders of Jews in
Eastern Europe.
TO-OP' Program to Unite
Citizens in Community
NEW YORK, N.Y.—The Com-
mission on Interfaith Activities of
Reform Judaism has launched a
"grass-roots" community p r o-
gram called "CO-OP" (Commit-
tee Organized for Progress), de-
signed to cut across religious and
racial lines, to unite citizens into
a local force to deal with such
community concerns as poverty,
civil rights and housing.
The new project, already set
in nine northeastern cafes, was
outlined to lay and rabbinic lead-
ers attending the opening session
of the two-day meeting of the
board of trustees of the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations
at the Americana Hotel.
Dr, Yaacov Herzog Accepts Post
as British Commonweahh Rabbi
(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)
JERUSALEM—Dr. Yaacov Her-
zog, assistant director general in
the Israel foreign affairs ministry
and son of the late Chief Rabbi
Isaac Herzog of Israel, accepted
Tuesday an offer tendered him
by a seven-man delegation of
British religious leaders of the
post of chief rabbi of the British
Commonwealth. Dr. Israel Brodie,
the present chief rabbi,. is retiring
shortly.
Dr. Herzog told the delegation
he was deeply moved by the
honor and that he had decided
to accept the post after deep con-
templation and heart searching.
He expressed the hope that as
chief rabbi he would have the
full cooperation of all segments of
British Jewry. A major doctrinal
dispute rocked British religious
Jewry last year.
Dr. Herzog said also that he
would not be dominated by any
groups, institution or individuals
and that he would be guided by
"my religious conscience, by the
precepts of Judaism and the con-
cepts of klal Yisroel, ever aware
of the inner meaning of the epoch
in Jewish history now unfolding."
Declaring that the "wrench
of departure" from Israel had
made his decision a difficult
one to reach, he added that
there was also present an urge
to serve the cause of Judaism
and the world spirit against a
"background of faith and Jew-
ish eternity." He noted that he
had been active in a diplomatic
career for many years and said
that "Providence" had guided
him back to the world of reli-
gion "in which my innermost
essence has always resided."
He consulted Monday night on
the offer with Premier Eshkol,

ted by a 125- to 9 vote here Mon-
day a Fair Sabbath bill which
would permit communities out-
side New York City to pass ordi-
nances allowing those who keep
their businesses closed on a sab-
bath other than Sunday, to do
business on Sunday.
Last year, the state legislature
adopted similar legislation which
applied only to New York City.
The current bill, extending this
legislation on a statewide basis,
now goes to the State Senate for
action.
