LITERALLY, THE French word
"discotheque" means record li-
brary or a place to keep records
. . . It has had its current con-
notation since the late 1940s when
the original Whiskey Go Go open-
ed in Paris as a private club where
members could dance to records
and consume whiskey, a drink
many Frenchmen then regarded as
exotic . . . The idea took hold and
spread until Paris alone has more
than 75 discotheques with 200,000
members . . . Some of the rooms
are ornate and exclusive, but most
stick to the original formula of
drinks and dancing to records .. .
So do most New York discotheques
. . . They offer recorded music
played over elaborate hi-fi and
stereo systems by a disc jockey
(called a disquaire) who observes
crowd reactions from a hidden
booth and chooses his records ac-
cording to the mood of the cus-
tomers.
DOES ANYBODY have a recipe
for a good Louisiana Cocktail
Sauce ? ? ? (Creamy, off-white
and slightly tart).
THE MENU at Cafe Gourmet on
Hamilton features French, Italian,
German and Russian cuisine pre-
pared and served with a European
flair.
DID YOU HEAR about the guy
at a fancy restaurant who wanted
to impress his friends so ordered
the whole meal in French . . .
which shook up the waiter, since
it was a Chinese reseaurant? . . .
Or how about this one . . . "My
friend laughed when I spoke to
the waiter in French, but the
laugh was on him. I told the waiter
to give him the cheek."
JACK'S CHOP HOUSE and
Cocktail Bar is a good place to go
. .. We recommend you try it .. .
The food is delicious and Jimmy
Cohn, pianist, does a fine
job on the ivories . . . There's
something extra 'bout a musician
who feels his music . . .
Jimmy appears to be of this cate-
gory . . . Try him with your re-
quests . . . Now that owner Jack
Freeman has the kitchen, too, he's
doing quite a job . . . After all,
when someone likes food the way

24c lb.

Jack does, it's hardly conceivable
that he would want anything
served that wasn't to his satisfac-
tion . . . Jack's is located in the
Green-10 Center (Greenfield and
10 Mile Rd.)
