Aaron Pregerson Dead at Age 80;
Was Pioneer in Zionist Activities

Aaron M. Pregerson, pioneer
Jewish leader and an affiliated
Zionist for 62 years, died Wednes-
day.
Mr. Pregerson, who observed his
80th birthday in .February, lived
in Detroit 60 of those years. He
helped found the Detroit chapter

of its formation here, the Allied
Jewish Campaign had his support,
both as volunteer and contributor.
Born in Karaselow, Ukraine, Mr.
Pregerson was interested in both
Hebrew and English literature and
was an avid reader.
He leaves his wife, the former
Mary Wine, whom he married here
in 1912. They lived at 17554 Rose-
lawn. Other survivors are a son,
,Milford R.; two daughters, Mrs.
David (Gertrude) Bruss and Mrs.
Norman (Judith) Snyder; and
seven grandchildren.

movement, and later became an
active leader in the Zionist Or-
ganization of Detroit. In 1927, he
became a life member of the Zion-
ist Organization of America.
Active in educational move-
ments, Mr. Pregerson served two
terms as president of the United
Hebrew Schools and was among
the sponsors of activities for con-
struction of Hebrew school build-
ings.
As a member of both Cong.
Shaarey Zedek and Adas Shalom,
he helped in construction activities
there, too. From the first year

that monuments be erected over
unmarked Jewish mass graves in
the Soviet Union, like Kiev's Babi
Yar, where many thousands of
Jews were murdered during the
Nazi occupation, was voiced pub-
licly in Moscow's Central Syna-
gogue, according to information
received here from the Soviet
capital.
The demand was advanced by
Reb Gregory Manevich, one of the
synagogue's oldest worshipers, at
solemn ceremonies May 9, in
which 4,000 Moscow Jews held
their own celebration of V-E Day.
He also pronounced,• in Hebrew, a
blessing over the state of Israeli,
pointing out that "the Jewish
people has waited 1,900 years to
see a Jewish state." He added:
"We must remember this fact, al-
though we do. not agree with all
of Israel's actions today."

Israel's Ambassador Yosef Tekoah
.and the entire staff of his mission.
The synagogue's spiritual leader,
Chief Rabbi Yehuda Leib Levin,
conducted the services, and can-
tor Steinberg with his large choir
chanted Hebrew litanies and sang

Art Authority, Dies .
at Museum Opener

JERUSALEM — International
art authority Alfred Moritz Frank-

furter died May 12 while here
for inaugural ceremonies of the

Israel Museum.
Mr. Frankfurter, 59, was edi-
tor of Art News in New York. A
funeral service and burial took
place in the Protestant cemetery
at the request of Mrs. Frank-
furter.

As editor of the most widely
read magazine in the fine-arts
field, Mr. Frankfurter was both
critic and historian, as well as
lecturer on the art field. He had
been writing about art since the

World's Fair art exhibition and

director of the American Pavilion
at the Venice International Expo-
sition in 1948.

Chicago-born Mr. Frankfurter
was with the Office of War In-
formation during World War II,
serving as policy control chief for
psychological warfare, overseas
branch, for which he received the
Legion of Merit in World War II.
Mr. Frankfurter was to have
spoken at the Hebrew University
of Jerusalem on his current visit.

Lou Siegel Dies;
NY Restaurateur

NEW YORK—Well known res-
taurateur and unofficial mayor of
the garment district, Lou G. Siegel,
died Sunday at age '72. Mr. Siegel
had suffered a concussion in a fall
at his restaurant May 7.
Mr. Siegel operated his kosher
restaurant, Lou G. Sigel, Inc., in
the garment district since 1924.
As "mayor" of that district, Mr.
Siegel was a member of the New
York League of Locality Mayors
in its 1930s' heyday.
Born in Romania, Mr. Siegel
came to this country in 1905, open-
ing his restaurant a few years
later. He belonged to a number of

Dr. Franz Kallmann, Dies

NEW YORK — German-born
genetics researcher Dr. Franz J.

Kallmann, who opposed Nazi laws
calling for compulsory steriliza-
tion of psychotic patients, died
May 12 at 67.
Dr. Kallmann was head of the
department of medical genetics
at the Clumbia-Presbyterian Med-
ical Center for 25 years and chief
of psychiatric research in medical
genetics at the New York State
Psychiatric Institute.
World renowned for his studies,
Dr. Kallmann received his train-
ing in Germany. While director of
neuropathological laboratories of
two state hospitals in Berlin, he
opposed the Nazi laws on sterili-
zation and as a result was forbid-
den to publish or speak at medi-
cal meetings. In 1936, he came
to New York.
