Scholars Program The Jewish Community Foun- dation of the United JewiSh Chari- ties of Detroit awarded a grant to the Bnai Brith Hillel Founda- tion at the University of Michi- gan to institute a Scholar In Residence Program at Ann Arbor and nearby campuses. The project will bring to the University, under Hillel auspices, a leading Jewish scholar for a period of a month. He will offer special courses and lectures in Jewish studies at the Bnai Brith Hillel Foundation, open to all stu- dents and faculty members, con- duct lectures and classes for the University; make himself avail- able for faculty and student semi- nars and discussions, and lectures and firesides at fraternities, sororities, campus organizations and living units. The Scholar-In- Residence will also accept invita- tions to address and consult with church groups and.. leaders both on the campus and in the com- munity. Erwin S. Simon, president of the United Jewish Charities of Detroit, and Wiliam Avrunin, ex- ecutive director of the Jewish Welfare Federation, announced the grant to the Bnai Brith Hillel Foundation at the University of Michigan. Max J. Zivian, past president of the United Jewish Charities, and chairman of the committee on grants of the Jewish Community Foundation, observed that the Scholar In Residence Program was approved as part of the Fed- eration's special research and pio- neering projects not normally in- cluded in Jewish Communal Ser- vice operating programs. The objectives of the program, Dr. Herman Jacobs, Hillel direc- tor, said, would emphasize the contribution of Jewish scholarship to the "centrality of Biblical tra- dition in the development of American Thought; the centrality of the Judaeo-Christian tradition for an understanding of Western culture; the centrality of Hebraic thought for an understanding of Western religious, interreligious, and intergroup seminars, lectures and conversations, and generate a continuing concern for the cause of group amity and understanding in the campus community. 18650 LIVERNOIS 1 block South of UN 3-9300 REPEAT CUSTOMERS SAY: MORE "DEXTER CHEVROLET IS THE BEST PLACE TO GET YOUR CAR."
