`Rope Dancers' Proves a Grand Finale
Center Theater closed its sea-
son's trilogy with 1. dramatic bang
last weekend. Morton Wishen-
grad's "The Rope Dancers," di-
rected by Betsy Savage, was done
with sensitivity by an able cast,
and its acting highlights were the
brightest of the year: June Snow
and Joyce Feurring.
The play, based on an actual
case history in New York's Belle-
vue Hospital, centers on the tragic
family circumstances resulting
from the birth 'of a six-fingered
child. Her physical aberration is
symptomatic of the emotional dis-
ease of the girl's mother, who has
kept the child virtually hidden for
11 years. The kindly Jewish doc-
tor who feels the pulse of the real
problem brings the drama to its,
if not happy, at least hopeful
conclusion.
Wishengrad had written the
play as a radio script for
"Cavalcade of America," but it
was rejected on the grounds
(according to Wishengrad) that
a six-fingered child projected an
"un-American image." The play
was done on "The Eternal
Light" and later, as an adapta-
tion, met with success on Broad-
way.
June Snow portrayed with con-
viction the mother so bitterly re-
signed to a life of fear with her
secret. Joyce Feurring as the
slovenly, good-hearted woman in
the downstairs tenement repre-
sents the exact opposite of her
neighbor, but was played equally
well.
Rollon Parker as the neer-do-
well, but well-meaning father was
better in this role than in the last
Center Theater production, "Dark
at the Top of the Stairs." In that
play, he was a not-quite-neer-do-
well-but-well-meaning father with
a bigger voice.
Abby Moran, the lonely, ail-
ing child, and Jan Winer, as the de-
moniacal neighbor girl gave good
performances; Henry Skoczylas
did much with a sliver of a role,
giving perhaps the most perfect
portrayal as the blase moving
man.
"The Rope Dancers" is not the
type of play to draw a crowd to a
community theater. But presented
thoughtfully, as it was, it merits
more attention than it received.
Center Theater dared to be dif-
ferent and hopefully will do so
again.
