Col. Arnon pointed out that the
$ ll 40 per
week
population of Israel is reaching
2,225,000 and many more immi-
grants from all countries are
sought. Numbers are essential to
Israel's defense, he said.
With reference to the latter, he
mentioned three "musts" to se-
cure the future of Israel:
"We have to explain the im-
portance of the National Water
Carrier project to our well-being.,
Without water we die.
"We have to strengthen Israel's
defense army. We need more and
better arms, more training. These
are the only things that stop the
enemy's threats from being a
reality.
"We have to fight with our-
selves to keep from relaxing
our vigil, from falling into a
routine. We must always be
aware of the dangers."
Arnon was introduced by Mor-
ris Lieberman, chairman of the
Zionist Council of Detroit. Re-

ferring to Israel as the "pinpoint
of democracy in the Middle East,"
Lieberman stressed the theme of
peace. "It's about time we stopped
talking about it and started doing
something about it," he said.
Sidney Shevitz brought greet-
ings from the Jewish Community
Council, of which he is president,
and the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion. He recalled past Detroit cele-
brations, dating back to 1948, and
said: "The significance of these
celebrations is to proclaim again
and again our adherence to the
Jewish ethic of responsibility. Ex-
pressing our joy is not enough.
We must renew our determina-
tion to support the state of
Israel."
The Sabra Trio, consisting of
the Shlomo Biedermans and Uri
Katz, led the audience through
generations of folk dances gleaned
from the many climes Jews have
known, from Yemenite to Hassi-
dic• Arella Barley, assisted by
Amir Rahav with the halil (re-
corder) and the Zionist Youth
choir; sang a number of Israeli
melodies, directed by Biederman.
Narrator was Evelyn Orbach, who
arranged the program.
The Department of Michigan,
Jewish War Veterans, and Zionist
Youth Council, presented the
American and Israeli flags, and
Rabbi Leon Fram delivered the
invocation after the singing of
both. National Anthems.
