Newest Grossinger Tennis
Clubhouse to Be Dedicated

TEL AVIV (JTA) Production
of an American film, "Cast a Giant
Shadow," , based on the biography
of Col. David "Mickey" Marcus,
the American West Point gradu-
ate who lost his life while fighting
in Israel's War of Independence,
will start here on May 18.
The wide-screen, color film, will
star Kirk Douglas as Col. Marcus;
Yul Brynner as a commander of a
unit of the Haganah, the pre-state
defense force of the Palestine
Jewish settlement; and John
Wayne as an American general.
Israel's army will cooperate with
the movie's producers, contribu-
ting 800 soldiers as "extras." The
shooting schedule calls for 50 days'
work in Israel and 21 more days
in Rome, where some of the in-
terior scenes will be filmed.

The dedication of the new
tennis clubhouse at Grossinger
Country Club, Grossinger, N.Y.,
is slated to be held on the
Decoration Day weekend, pro Eli
E. Epstein has announced.
The new clubhouse, replete with
facilities to add to tennis enjoy-
ment at the resort, is only one of
the many new tennis features at
Grossinger's. Epstein, who is coach
of the Yeshiva University tennis
varsity, said that the all-weather
courts are being checked. Two are
being completely resurfaced, and
the resort's remaining two clay
courts are being transformed into
all-weather units- Backdrop cur-
tains are being custom-made for
the courts.

LOOKING BACK ON COL-
UMNS OF YESTERDAYS . . .
JUNE 6, 1947 . . . Bob Hope
had Helen Raimi locked in a phone
booth at the airport. . . . He stood
directly outside the booth when
a crowd started skiing down his
nose and the red-headed Helen
almost suffocated before getting
her nickel back. . . • Ida Dia-
mond's blossom-filled hat brought
comic Bob's remark, "First town
I've appeared in where they've
presented me with flowers on a
woman's head." . . . Both girls
happened to be at the field when
Hope arrived with Jerry Colonna
and Vera Vague.

OCT. 31, 1952 . . . Recalling
one of Winston Churchill's visits
to the United States, Irving Samp-
son tells of being present when
England's prime minister ad-
dressed a group of prominent
Jewish businessmen in New York.
.. • Churchill said that the Israeli
embassy in London was mortified
to discover that all the embassies
made a point of offering a cup
of tea in the afternoon to the bob-
bies assigned to posts in front of
their buildings. . . . The Israeli
staff hastened to make amends to
their bobby, explaining, "Forgive
us if we don't know all the fine
points as yet. We haven't had an
embassy for 2,000 years!"
