LADIES DAY, 50c Cinerama, Technicolor, with Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw, Robert Ryan and Dana Andrews portraying the leading characters, and former Prussian officers acting as techni- cal advisors. In addition to more than 700 soldiers, many of them borrowed from the armed forces of dictator Franco, the battle scenes needed 52 manned Tiger tanks, 10 half-tracks, aoo Mausers, 125 MI Garand rifles, 50 carbines, 20-sub-Thompsons, 12 Browning machine guns, 25 grenade launch- ers, assorted bazookas, and Colt automatics. The forthcoming picture of "The Battle of the Bulge," written by twice Academy - Award winner Philip Yordan (of "Anna Lucasta" fame), not only shows the slaugh- ter of captured U.S. soldiers but also the heroism of our trapped, out-numbered G.I.'s who broke the siege and helped to turn the tide of war. Richard Fleischer, who made himself a name as director of "Compulsion" and "Barabbas," now at 20th Century-Fox, is guid- ing the $6,500,000 production of "Fantastic Voyage," starring Stephen Boyd, Arthur Kennedy, Edmond O'Brien and Arthur O'Con- nell. Fleischer told us that the whole idea of his current picture, produced by Saul David, is a voy- age through the body and into the bloodstream of a scientist whose brain must be operated from with- in in order to preserve the nuclear secrets it contains. The director feels that the most important thing about the filming is not the gimmick angle but the artistic con- cept of the unique yarn, in which a group of doctors within a tube- shaped submarine have been tem- porarily miniaturized to microbe size in order that they and the tiny vehicle can be injected into the body of a patient. Sam Spiegel (of "Lawrence of Arabia"), who has been roaming the wide world for the past 10 years, now is settling at Columbia Studios in Hollywood for his per- sonal production of "The Chase," a modern-day Texas-themed story, based on Horton Foote's novel, with a screen play by Lillian Hell- man, and Arthur Penn directing. Marlon Brando is set to co-star with Jane Fonda in the color- Panavision story to go before the cameras later this month. * C * Martin Balsam, who won wide critical recognition as the producer in "The Carpetbaggers," has been given a similar role of broader scope in Joseph E. Levine's cur- rent feature "Harlow," starring Carrol Baker (Mrs. Jack Garfein) as the platinum blonde beauty of the 1930's. Balsam, who recently returned from London, where he- costarred with Widmark in "The Bedford Incident," portrays now the key role of Everett Redman, the studio head signing Jean Har- low to her first term contract as a star. * * * Theodore Bikel has been signed by Joseph E. Levine for a co-star- ring role in "Sands of the Kala- hari," now before the cameras on location in Africa, with Cy End- field directing from his own screenplay, adapted from the novel by William Mulvihill. Stuart Whit-. man, meanwhile, has replaced George Peppard; others in the cast of the adventure yarn - are Susannah York and Stanley Baker, Enfield's star and production part- ner from "Zulu." Two Soviet Jews Among 21 Winners of Lenin Prizes Awarded in Moscow LONDON (JTA)—Two Russian Jews, a violinist and a director, were among the 21 winners of Lenin Prizes announced by Tass, official press agency, to mark Lenin's birthday. The violininist was Leonid Ko- gan, the director was Yuri Zavad- sky, who won an art award for his direction of a play, "Masquerade." The awards, each worth 10,000 rubles ($11,000), are given annual- ly in art, literature and science as the Communist equivalent of the Nobel prizes.
