a little bit of everything

By Danny Raskin

WEATHER IS GETTING NICE
. . . time to take a drive out to
those fine eating places sometimes
hard to get to during the bad
weather .. . Highly recommended
though not as far out as others, is
Rotunda Country Inn on Pine Lake
. . . The ride is wonderful and the
food even better . . . Owner Jack
Simon has recaptured the original
Rotunda reputation and added to
it . . . which is something! . . .
You'll enjoy it at Rotunda Country
Inn .. We like the food . . . and
the prices, too!
• * *
YOU DON'T HAVE to be a con-
noisseur to make a good selection
when choosing wine to use while
dining . . . Generally, red wines
are served with red meats and
roasts and white wines usually
with fish or light meats ... Cham-
pagne and its Italian cousin, Asti,
may properly be served anytime.
* *
BEFORE OPENING THE Lon-
don Chop House, Les Gruber oper-
ated the Den of Forty Thieves at
Broadway and John R during the
late '20s and early '30s . . . The
specialty of the Den, we are told,
in addition to good food, were some
14 readers given to forecasting the
future from the tea leaves in the
bottom of a cup.
*
*
GOOD NEWS THAT Leo Adler,
Flagpole Restaurant boss, is home
from the hospital . . . and on the
mend.
* * *
MAGIC TRICKS WITH your
corned beef sandwich . . That's
what you can have now at Martys
in the Green-8 Shopping Center
. .. Marty Horowitz, a noted hyp-
notist, also, gives out with magic
to the special delight of youngsters
. . . Marty, by the way, has more
than his reputation following him
.. He has the people, too . . . Re-
cent occasion was gent who worked
on an info sheet during newspaper
strike of 1958 . . . Remembers
Marty donating a tray to the hard-
working journalists . . . and has
been a regular customer ever since
. . . downtown and now Green-8.

THE ACCENT at most good
Italian restaurants today in Detroit

Italian fare. Spaghetti is on the
menu. of course, and so is ravioli
. . . But customers have been get-
ting away from the or dinar y
Italian dishes as their palates be-
come more educated . . . More and
more of them are calling for such
Latin delights as canelloni, brac-
ciole, manicotti and veal spiadini
... For dessert, try zuppa inglese.
* * *
SKIPPERS TABLE on W. Seven
Mile Rd. near Livernois, is inter-
esting . . . The former Crossroads
Restaurant has been remodeled by
Milt Farnum in the seafaring style
that makes folks think they're din-
ing aboard a massive yacht . . . The
self-serve smorgasboard setting
especially is done up cleverly in
nautical styling . . . Only thing
missing is the boat rocking . . . and
who wants that where there's food
involved!
* *
LOONEY LAWS continue to
crop up . . . Athens, Ill., has a law
which makes it illegal to sell any
beverage, including milk, tea and
coffee, unless the seller has paid
a license fee ... In Hammond, Ind.,
watermelon eaters are forbidden
to throw seeds on the sidewalk .. .
and down south in New Orleans,
anyone leaving watermelon rind
in a public place "shall be jailed."
.. . Kansas state law forbids one
to serve ice cream or cherry pie
on Sunday . . . In Baltimore, only
pure, unadulterated, unsophisti-
cated and wholesome milk may be
sold." . . . According to a State
Housing Act, California law makes
it illegal to sleep in the kitchen
but alright to do your cooking in
the bedroom.
