School to Teach Art for Art's Sake

Art works donated by residents of the community have brought
a new look to Hillel Day School. Assisting in the school's efforts

Detroit to Celebrate Israel's Birthday
at 17th Annual Independence Day Fete

The city-wide celebration of the
17th anniversary of Israel's Inde-
pendence will be held Sunday, May
9, at 8 p.m., in Adas Shalom Syna-
gogue, Sidney M. Shevitz, president
of the Jewish Community Council,
and Irving Pokemper, chairman of
the Detroit Zionist Council, an-
nounces. The celebration in Detroit
has been held under the auspices
of the joint committee of the two
Zionist councils, since the re-estab-
lishment of the State • of Israel in
1948.
Shevitz and Pokempner urged in-
dividuals and organizations to re-
serve the date and plan to attend
one of the most colorful and new-
est holidays in the Jewish calen-
dar. The Detroit community will
join with Jewish communities
throughout the world in demon-
strating their support of the
growth and development of the
state of Israel.
Other members of the Israel In-
dependence Day planning commit-
tee, in addition to Shevitz and
Pokempner are: Lawrence W.
Crohn, Dr. Arthur Feues, Mrs. Sam

to Discuss 'Sex in Home'

Parents Without Partners will
meet 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the
Jewish Center to hear Social
Worker Mrs. Ernestine Lerner
speak on "Sex Attitudes in the
Home." Coffee and socializing will
follow. There is a nominal charge
for prospective members.

`Jew and Civil Rights'

A panel discussion on "The Jew
and Civil Rights" will be held by
the Student Zionist Organization
and Bnai Brith Hillel Foundation
8 p.m. Sunday at the Mart Room
of Mackenzie Union, Wayne State

The Israel-Joshua Singers book
"Chawer Nachman" will be re-
viewed by Leib Borenstein at the
semi-monthly meeting of Branch

AJ Committee's
Regional Parley
Set for May

The first Michigan regional con-
ference of the American Jewish
Committee will be held at the
Whittier Hotel, May 2, it was an-
nounced by the conference pro-
gram chairman, Lee B. Brody, and
the conference arrangements chair-
man, Mrs. Barbara Marcuse. The
Detroit Chapter is sponsoring the
conference in cooperation with
outstate members of the AJ Com-
mittee. Major participants in the
conference include David Danzig,
associate director of the AJ Com-
mittee, who will deliver the . key-
note address at a morning brunch,
and Roy Reuther, national direc-
tor, citizenship legislative depart-
ment of the UAW, who will be
guest speaker at the dinner.
Danzig will survey major areas
of current concern of the AJ Com-
mittee including the continued

Kol Yisroel, Israel's radio net-
work, and the Council of Jewish
Federations and Welfare Funds
have cooperated to develop a pi-
lot radio program which, if suc-
cessful, will represent the first in
a series to be broadcast in Israel
on Jewish life in North America.
Israeli radio executives com-
pleted the project in an attempt
to answer some of their listeners'
questions about the United States
and Canada — about American-
Jewish identification, Jewish com-
mitment, Jewish communal or-
ganization and Jewish youth.

of perceptive articles. Reuther will
address himself to the challenges
in civil rights in 1965.
A feature of the Conference will
be a series of three workshops.
One workshop topic is "Anti-Semi-
tism, Social Discrimination and
Prejudice in the Community." Hy-
man Bylan, AJC national board of
delegates member from Grand
Rapids, will be chairman. Re-
sources persons are Lawrence Cov-
itz, a national board member from
Flint, Julius Isenberg, a board
member from Kalamazoo, and
Irving Geisser, executive director
of the Fline Jewish Welfare Fed-
eration.
A second workshop will deal
with the topic "Church-State Issues
and Relations With the Vatican."
The chairman will be Rabbi Rich-
ard Hertz of Temple Beth El, a
vice president of the Detroit chap-
ter. Resource persons are Leonard
Gordon, Michigan area director of
the Committee, Leonard Kasle,
executive board member of the De-
troit chapter, and Father James
Sheehan, chairman of the Arch-
bishop's Committee on Human
Relations.
T h e third workshop's topic is
"Negro - Jewish Relations" with
Philip Marcuse, a past president of
the Detroit chapter, as chairman.
Resource persons are Robert Al-
pern, community relations chair-
man of the Detroit chapter, Arthur
Johnson, deputy director of the
Michigan Civil Rights Commis-
sion, and Joseph Ross, a national
vice president of AJC Commit-
tee.
At the dinner, Detroit Chapter
President Avern Cohn will present
his annual report.
Members of the planning com-
mittee of the conference included
Robert Alpern, Mrs. Paul Broder,
Mrs. Clement Hopp and Mrs. Os-
car Zemon. Outstate planners were
Hyman Bylan of Grand Rapids,
Samuel Meisel of Jackson, Milton
Orwin of Kalamazoo and David
Weiss of Grand Rapids.
