Catholic Exposer
of Anti-Semitism
Will Be Honored

PROVIDENCE, R. I. — Father
Edward H. Flannery, author of a
major book by an American Catho-
lic priest on the history of anti-
Semitism, will be honored by the
Rhode Island unit of the American
Jewish Committee at its annual
dinner meeting, May 2.
Father Flannery, guest of the
evening along with Bishop Russell
J. McVinney of Providence, is
author of "The Anguish of the
Jews," published by Macmillan.
The book covers anti-Semitism from
three centuries before the birth of
Jesus and proceeds, century by cen-
tury and country by country, down
to the Nazi holocaust, the subtle
farms of discrimination in the U.S.
and Soviet persecution of Jews in
the post-World War II era, seeking
always to find the motivations.
The American Jewish Committee
unit is honoring a native son in
Father Flannery for he is editor
of the Providence diocesan news-
paper, the PROVIDENCE VISITOR.
In this position he has long
pioneered in advancing Catholic-
Jewish understanding through etli
torials, articles, and special fea•
tures, providing background under-
standing in depth about Jewish
history, religion, and current
events for its readers.
Rabbi Marc H. Tanenbaum, di-
rector of the • American Jewish
Committee's department of inter-
religious affairs, will be the prin-
cipal speaker at the dinner.

TEL AVIV—Aaron Becker, sec-
retary general of the Histadrut,
Israel's Labor Federation, has can-
celed a threat to resign over post-
ponement of Histadrut elections
from July to September, and • the
elections will be held in Septem-
ber, it was disclosed Wednesday.
Becker made his threat, which
also involved a number of his
supporters in the Histadrut, on
grounds there was no need for
postponement. It was understood
he withdrew the threat under pres-
sure from the Mapai Party, a
dominant force in the Histadrut.
The postponement was assured
when Ahdut Avodah indicated it
supported the idea. Mapai and
Ahdut have enough votes to pass
the proposal.
