State Dept. Favoring Ribicoff Move to Condemn Soviet Policy on Jews

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Chair-
man J. W. Fulbright of the Sen-
ate Foreign Relations Committee
is being informed by the State De-
partment that the administration
no longer objects to the Ribicoff
resolution condemning Soviet op-
pression of its Jews.
Acting on a State Department
letter, which opposed a foreign

aid bill amendment as one which
might do Soviet Jewry more harm
than good, Sen. Fulbright last year
arranged deletion of the amend-
ment, although many Senators fav-
ored it.
This year, Sen. Abraham A. Ribi-
coff, Connecticut Democrat, rein-
troduced his measure as a Sen-
ate resolution with the support of

67 co-sponsors of both parties. The
apparent change in State Depart-
ment position makes it likely that
the resolution will be adopted at
this session.
Hearings have not yet been
scheduled, although Sen. Ribicoff
has asked Sen. Fulbright to ar-
range hearings at the earliest pos-
sible date.

Only two weeks ago, Assistant
Secretary of State Douglas Mac-
Arthur II reaffirmed the State De-
partment's opposition to a proposal
that the United States formally
raise with the USSR the ques-
tion of the treatment of the Jews
in Russia. MacArthur had voiced
that official stand in a letter to
Sen. Hugh Scott, Pennsylvania Re-
publican.

IN WHAT CAN BE claimed as
one of the finest performances by
an amateur group in the com-
munity, 1,200 people heartily
greeted the "American Yiddish
Musical Revue" by Detroit City of
Hope Cancer Fighters in a filled
Shaarey Zedek social hall .. . An
enthusiastic audience filled every
chair, and even those who had to
stand didn't mind, , , It was a
magnificent show, written by
Helen Levy, Bert Bassin, Eleanor
Shapiro and Goldie Young . .
Goldie, veteran of the Yiddish
stage and perennial head of the
Cancer Fighter dramatic group,
was also choreographer, director
and producer . .. plus designer of
the costumes which the girls them-
selves made . . . 18 lassies in all
comprised the wonderful cast that
did such a great job . . . As ex-
ample of the charitable hard-work-
ing ferns that put on the show, the
chorus line was made up of six
girls who combined are mothers of
18 children . . . Unlike so many
other amateur performances, this
one was fast-moving, very enter-
taining and amazingly well
polished ... As a result of so many
folks wanting to see the revue, it
has been decided to hold the
"American Yiddish Musical Re-
vue" another two nights, April 28
and 29, at Southfield High . . .
The 20 pounds coldie Young lost
in months of rehearsal can now
be divided by three!

ELLIOTT NELSON, behind bars
at the local race track windows,
says goodbye to the "cruel cruel
world of batchelorhood" as he
joins the parade of those who said
those famous last words, "It'll
never happen to me." . . . Con-
firmed batch son of Maury and
Helen Nelson, Elliott will marry
Joyce Sherman, daughter of Fan-
nie Sherman, sometime this year.

DATE HAS BEEN SET for
showing of the documentary film
on the Nuremberg trials, starring
Goering, Hess, etc. . . . May 4 by
Knights of Pythias, Detroit Lodge
55, at Castle Hall, 15787 Wyoming
. . . Open to the public . . . This
Tuesday night will be third Pass-
over Seder by Detroit 55, with
public invited to attend.

JERRY ABELS is crazy about
his new Buick Wildcat . . . and
won't let anybody touch it . . .
Coming out of Cong S h a a r e y
Zedek recently, he went out to
parking lot and found it gone . . .
Jerry immediately called the
Southfield police and disgustedly
got a ride home . . . In the mean-
time, Edward Fleischman drove
home what he thought was his
Chevrolet Impala . . . rode it all
the next day, until over 30 miles
later he suddenly realized it
wasn't his car . . . Ed called
Detroit police, was told to contact
the Southfield cops, who told him
whose car he was driving . . .
Seems he had gotten into Jerry's
car by mistake and when his Chevy
keys fit, just drove off . . while
his auto stayed parked on the lot
all night . . How come the keys
fit? . . Even Jerry's salesman
can't answer that one . . . plus the
fact that Ed couldn't tell the dif-
ference!

Tough Brake for Drivers

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel's

ing lessons and the hiring of halls.
The night club tax will be 10 per
cent of the customer's bill.
