between Mexican-style food and
true Mexican fare .. . We are in-
formed that the Bandit's Villa on
Livernois has the latter . . . First
time we ate Mexican food was
when Carlos Valedez, the singer,
took us to a Mexican eatery about
nine years ago in Detroit . . . Re-
cently, while in New York, another
songster, Julio Gorda, took us to
his favorite place . . . and insisted
on ordering our meal, a task we
gladly delegated . . . We started
with chili con carne .. . This was
followed by tocos de carne, a thin
fried pancake affair folded and
stuffed with chopped salad and
ground meat . . . To this we added
Mexican chili sauce . . . As we ate
it, we could feel our body temp-
erature zooming and momentarily
lost the use of our vocal cords .. .
We sloshed it all down with an
icy bottle of Carta Blanca, the
internationally celebrated Mexican
beer . . . Our next course consisted
of hot tamales, spicy but good,
and we finished it all off with the
frijoles refritos, which are simply
refried beans, though very good
tasting . . . At this juncture, an-
other bottle of cold beer seemed
to be the wisest choice . . . Julio
told us that the best thing for
newcomers to order is the com-
bination plate, consisting of
tostados, tocos, enchiladas and
tamales . . . We quite agree.

star-studded "name" list for Fay

SAM BOESKY is the sole
proprietor at Darbys . .. No other
famous namesake is affiliated with
the nationally noted Detroit eatery
which has earned a niche not only
as the place to go and be seen .. .
but also the place to go for good
food and good service.
ERNESTOS is the place in New
York you ask about for Hungarian
food . . . It's at 126 E. 56th Street
. . . with delights such as Toltott
kaposzta, Paprikascirke and Fan-
tanyeros . . . all prepared with
traditional love for fine cooking
. . Reservations advisable.

THAT VIENNA STEAK dinner
at Marty's in the Green-8 Shopping
Center, is a real value . . . Good
meat, lots of it (16 ozs.) and all
the trimmings for a satisfying
meal . . . For the first time, last
week, we tried a Texan Special
. . . A fine taste treat, The Texan is
an omelet stuffed with delicacies
such as corned beef, onions, green
peppers and even potatoes.
