His father was the village cob-
bler. When the family moved to
town, his father took up a stall
in the mellah and David and his
brothers and sisters took to roam-
ing the ghetto byways.
At age 13, a stunted and under-
nourished youth, he was enrolled
in the ORT school at AM Sebaa in
Casablanca, and this marked the
beginning of his formal education.
He learned to read and write
properly. He was taught Hebrew
and religious subjects.

Slowly, laboriously, he was.train-
ed in carpentry. The school also
gave him a good solid meal every
day. David still recalls his humi
liation when he first applied for
admission to the Ain Sebaa School.
They refused him, thinking he
could not be more than 9. But then
he began to grow.

This school, one of the most
modern centers of technical edu-
cation in North Africa, made David
the first in his family to learn a
skilled trade.

Two years later began the big
change in his life. The entire fam-
ily arrived in Israel. They came to
Kiryat Gat, the new town then
being planned in the Lachish re-
gion. They were even given a
house of their own!
David was now 15, and as an
ORT-trained carpenter, was well
qualified to begin earning some
money, especially with all the
building sites springing up out-
side the little township. He got
a job and was able to help the
family.
David could have gone on for
the rest of hjs life in Kiryat Gat,
but his ambition had been fired.
He was intelligent, and he saw
that Israel could absorb any num-
ber of young men with higher tech-
nical skills. He aspired to be an
engineer. Jewish Agency welfare
workers sent him to Tel Aviv for
an interview and from there to the
Syngalowski Center outside Tel
Aviv.. The youth applied for the
three - year precision Mechanics
course.
It was explained that due to the
large immigration, there was a
long waiting list.- Could he return
eight months later, in September?
David could not wait—his father
had died, his youngest sister and
brother were still in school, one
of his alder-sisters had joined the
Army and the other was a nurse.
The family depended on him.
He obtained a letter of introduc-
tion to the ORT Vocational High
School in Ashkelon, and there
took a night-school course in ma
thematics and science.
At length came the long-await-
ed letter from Syngalowski Center.
David became a student in the
largest technical training institute
in the Middle East. With a grant
provided by ORT (with the sup-
port of Israel's Ministry of Edu-
cation) he embarked upon his
studies. He was now 17. By tak-
ing on some part-time work in Tel
Aviv, he was able to send money
home each week.
Towards the end of his course,
David—now a skilled technician—
had a summons from the director.
Would David be interested in go-
ing to the ORT school in Switzer-
land to study to become an in- i
structor? Would he! He remained
there two years, coming home to
take up a position as a full-time
instructor in adult courses at the
ORT school in Natanya. He is
there today.
