Madel eine Lewin-Epstein Dies in Israel Madeleine Lewin-Epstein, one of the most distinguished women in Israel, who was the first American woman to join the Hadassah Med- ical Unit that went to Palestine during World War I, in 1918, died in Jerusalem two weeks ago. Mrs. Lewin-Epstein, in addition to her services as the first Hadas- sah nurse in Palestine, became famous as a hostess after her marriage to Dr. Samuel Lewin- Epstein, a brother of the late Mrs. Abraham M. Hershman of Detroit. Mrs. Lewin - Epstein's father-in-law was head of the Medical Unit. She retained the role of hostess after Israel's emergence to state- hood. Her knowledge of the land, her Zionist b a c k g r o u n d, her `harm, contributed to making her nome among the most prominent social centers in the Holy City. She is survived by, besides her husband, a son, Dr. Jacobs Lewis- Epstein, who studied in this coun- try at the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsyl- vania. Another son, Noah, died in action in the last war. In a tribute to Mrs. Lewin- Epstein, Zionist leader Rose Hal prin said: "A gallant human being, warm of heart, intrepid in danger, a trained nurse with extraordinary tenderness and goodness in rela- tion to the sick and suffering• a woman whose physical beauty was lit up by inner qualities . . . she will long serve for those who knew her as example and guide." During the War of Liberation, Mrs. Halprin turned her home, which was almost on the Jordanian border, into a hospital for the wounded. Working with ouly two untrained Haganah girls, she per- formed both medical and nursing duties, even setting limbs and per- forming simple operations. She helped set up hospitals and was actively involved in aid to children.
