SAM BARNETT and His Orchestra LI 1-2563 PLASTIC COVERS By Mrs. Rosen 18055 James Couzens * * * Detroit Woman Writes Amusing Children's Book ORCH ESTRA CALL: LI 7 - 0896 or LI 5 - 2737 It's thin as a whisker, but young children will find Thelma Isaacs' just-published book of verse as appealingg - as a box full of kittens. In "Chester, The Elegant Ches- hire Cat," the Detroiter relates the un-elegant exploits of a mis- chievous tabby. The reader of this very read- aloudable volume published by Vantage Press will be scarcely aware that Chester's presence among the denizens of Woodland Lagoon is highly irregular. (The charming illustrations by Nell Clairmonte show Chester is obvi- ously a run-away housecat who has shown preference to living among such lovables as Lana Leopard, a yak named Yuba — who plays a tuba — and Livermore Loon.) Mrs. Isaacs, whose own early years in the Old Country were far from idyllic, has created a fanciful world of never-ending childhood in "Chester, The Elegant Cheshire Cat" * * * Unfortunately, a second book of verse written by Mrs. Isaacs, issued simultaneously with "Ches- ter," misses by considerably more than a whisker. "Tongue in Cheek" presents her observations on life as wife (of Irving Isaacs) and mother (of two teen-aged daugh- ters). In too many instances, the verse is forced, the subject over- done. There are some exceptions, and Mrs. Isaacs' sprightly imagination can carry the book across. Take this limerick: Delilah, though hot in pursuit, Didn't crop Samson's handsome hirsute. Instead he was shorn, Of the locks he had worn., When they made him an Army recruit. How Mrs. Isaacs has found the time to write two books is mystify- ing. She has enough material, no doubt, for a third book, based on her life—from the time her family fled by horse and wagon from the Russian Ukraine to her current head-whirling activities. She is employed in the building and real estate business, besides keeping a home. In addition to memberships in organizations, she is past president of Bnai Brith's Einstein Chapter and financial sec- retary of the BBW Council, was a 1964 area chairman of the Muscu- lar Dystrophy Association and is a member of Temple Israel. If she finds time to continue her diversifying verse writing for publication, Mrs. Isaacs might do well to concentrate her talent on children's books. Books like "Chester" would be pUrr-fect. --C.H.
