The Southfield Blue Jay basket-
ball team placed as the_No. 2 team
in the state for the 1964-65 basket-
ball season.
Out of the 640 Class A basket-
ball teams competing in the state,
Southfield lost its only game of
the tourney in the state finals to
Benton Harbor, led by All-Ameri-
can L. C. Brown. The Southfield
team defeated the Walled Lake
team in the quarterfinals by the
score of 68-45, then in the semi-
finals, before more than 12,000
spectators, the Jays led by their
star guard Rick Coleman, who
tallied 36 points, beat a highly re-
garded Detroit Southwestern team,
82-59.
In the finals, the Jays fell to
Benton Harbor in spite of a great
team effort. Rick Coleman, who
transferred to Southfield from
Indianapolis, was named to the
all-tournament team, the first
player from Southfield to re-
ceive such an honor.
The annual Southfield High
School Variety Show sponsored by
the Student Congress, will be held
April 13 in the school auditorium.
Tryouts were held last week for
the acts that will compete for the
prizes at the show.
The Southfield High dramatic
department has once again pro-
duced an outstanding spring musi-
cal, "The Sound of Music." The
group this year set a precedent by
building a set which not only will
fit the Southfield stage but also
the stage at the Masonic Temple,
where the play will be presented
tonight and tomorrow night.
Among those in the cast are
Carole Krass, Melinda Loria, Jo-
ann Couville, and Marvin Stromer.
