Dr. Jack Rom, Prominent Physician
and WSU Professor, Dead at 52

Wayne State University profes-
sor and prominent Detroit physi-
cian, Dr. Jack Rom, died Monday
at age 52.
Dr. Rom, 4775 W. Outer Dr., was
active in the Jewish community,
having been vice president and
treasurer of the Jewish Family
and Children's Service and co-
chairman of the Physician Section
of the Allied Jewish Campaign.
He belonged to C o n g. Shaarey
Zedek.
Detroit - born Dr. Rom was a
graduate of Wayne State's college
of medicine and received a mas-
ter's degree in internal medicine.

As a major, he served four years
in the medical corps during World
War II following internship and
residency at Receiving Hospital.
For his war service, he received
a bronze star.
Dr. Rom was chief of internal
medicine and editor of the hos-
pital bulletin at Sinai Hospital,
a consultant at Brent and Vet-
erans Hospitals, chief of the al-
lergy clinic at Detroit Receiving
since 1946, and chief of the divi-
sion of m e d i c i n e, Detroit
Memorial Hospital.
Among his affiliations, he was
medical section chairman of the
Council of the Wayne County
Medical Society, chairman of the
society's committee on aging, mem-
ber of the geriatrics committee and
special committee on alcoholism
and drug adiction for the Michi-
gan State Medical Society, and
member of the New York Aca-
demy of Science. He also served
on the Wayne State University
board of governors.
Dr. Rom leaves his wife, Thel-
ma; a son, Melvyn; two daughters,
Rosalind and Judith; his mother,
Mrs. Vera Rom; a brother, Nor-
man; and a sister, Mrs. Benjamin
Safir; and one grandchild.
The Jewish Family and Chil-
dren's Service has established a
memorial fund in his name.

Mrs. Arnowitz Killed
Crossing Street to Party

Mrs. Gussie Arnowitz, active in
Jewish Center groups, was killed
by a truck while crossing the
street to a Center Purim party
Saturday evening. She was 72.
Mrs. Arnowitz, 10734 Curti s,
lived across the street from the
Center.
A Detroiter since 1910, Russian-
born Mrs. Arnowitz belonged to
the former Shaarey Torah Syna-
gogue on Brush Street. She was
a member of the Center Culture
Club, 12th Street Mothers Club
and the Hebrew Benevolent So-
ciety.
Mrs. Arnowitz is survived by a
son, Morris; two daughters, Mrs.
Morris (Eva) Ravitz and Mrs. Irv-
ing (Lilly) Holtzman; two sisters,
Mrs. Celia Newman of New York
and Mrs. Rachel Efros; and nine
grandchildren.
