Judaism Council Attacks U. S. Group in German Paper Jews in New Jersey Town Form Patrol
BONN (JTA) — The Deutsche in connection with the denuncia- by applause three times by mem-
National-Zeitung and Soldaten-Zen- tion by the newspaper, in anti- bers of various political parties. Like NY Maccabees to Fight Vandals

tung, a German extremist national-
ist weekly which was attacked in
Parliament last week as a news-
paper "each line of which pro-
trudes poisonous anti-Semitism,"
carries in its current issue a long
article by an official of the Amer-
ican Council for Judaism, severely
attacking the Conference of Presi-
dents of Major Jewish Organiza-
tions and Zionist activities in the
United States.
This is the second article by of-
ficials of the American Council for
Julaism in the German extremist
organ which was charged in parli-
ament with using "the language
of the potential murderers of to-

MOITOW."

The first article, written by Rab-
bi Elmer Berger, executive vice-
president of the Council for Juda-
ism, appeared as the leading front-
page article in the issue of March
5. The article in the current issue
is written by William Gottlieb,
the Council's public relations di-
rector.
A spokesman for the Ministry of
Justice said the Ministry was seek-
ing to determine whether legal ac-
tion could be taken against the ex-
tremist right-wing newspaper, in
view of the assertion in Parlia-
ment by a Social Democratic Depu-
ty, Dr. Adolf Arndt, that the
Deutsche National-Zeitung and Sol-
daten - Zeitung carries "dishonor-
able" anti-Semitic propaganda. The
spokesman said that the Ministry
was "closely scrutinizing" the
newspaper each week. The investi-
gation is being conducted by the
Chief Prosecutor in Munich.
The charges in Parliament
against the newspapers were voiced

Semitic terms, of the supporters of
the proposed extension of the sta-
tute of limitations on prosecution
of Nazi war criminals. The state-
ment by Dr. Arndt against the ex-
tremist newspaper was interrupted

Dr. Eugen Gerstemnaier, Speaker
of the House, expressed "the gra-
titude of the Parliament" to Dr.
Arndt for denunciation of the
newspaper from the tribute of the
Bundestag.

Yadin Finds Fragments at Massada

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire

JERUSALEM — Fragments of
the long-lost Hebrew original of
the Book of Jubilees, an apocry-
phal version of portions of the
Book of Genesis, have been found
in the excavations at Massada, the
stronghold near the Dead Sea
where the last Jewish defenders
held out against the Romans in the
1st Century of the Common Era
(C.E.)
Announcement of the new find
was made by Dr. Yigael Yadin,
Hebrew University archaelogist
and director of the current excava-

Yeshiva College Ranks
High in Doctorates

Yeshiva College ranks among
the highest in the nation in doc-
toral productivity, according to
Prof. Morris Silverman, registrar,
who revealed that graduates of the
liberal arts and sciences college
for men at Yeshiva University
earn doctoral degrees at the rate
of four times the national average.
Prof. Silverman, who recently
compiled a national report on
earned research doctorates, said
that at least 10.4 per cent of the
1,655 graduates of Yeshiva Col-
lege between 1932 and 1959 went
on to earn research doctorates.

tions which are being concluded
this week.
The Book of Jubilees, which
had been available until now only
from an Ethiopic translation of a
Greek text, deals with episodes
from the time of the Creation
until the Exodus from Egypt. The
fragments found at Massada relate
the efforts of the Archangel of
Hatred to overthrow Moses.
Another recent discovery at
the site is a collection of 53
shekels and half shekels which,
together with the 17 found last
year, constitute the largest sin-
gle group known to exist today
and the only ones in a definite
single archeological level which
confirms their dating at be-
tween 66 to '73 C.E.
Summarizing the results of the
excavations, Dr. Yadin reported
that a total of 3,800 coins were
found at the site, as well as more
than 1,000,000 pottery fragments.
One of the mysteries still re-
maining with regard to the
fortress, Dr. Yadin pointed out,
was the fact that only 28 skeletons
have been found of the 970 de-
fenders known to have died at
the site.
He said that 50,000 cubic meters
of earth and stones were sifted
in the course of the 11 months
of excavation, which uncovered
about 10 miles of walls and many
buildings. He estimated that plans
to maintain the site would cost
about 250,000 pounds ($83,000)
annually.

FOR OAK PARK COUNCIL

RESIDENTS OF SOUTHFIELD ..

ASBURY PARK, N. J. (3TA)—A
group of Jewish men have organ-
ized a system of nightlong patrols
in nearby Wanamassa—similar to
the Maccabee group set up by Has-
sidic Jews in Brooklyn—in an ef-
fort to apprehend vandals who
have been smashing windows and
defacing the entrance of the Hillel
Day School in that town.
Six large windows in the school
building were smashed in a period
of five days. Since the school
moved into the building six years
ago, more than 100 windows have
been smashed.
Rabbi Morris A. Shmidman, dean
of the school and spiritual leader

of Cong. Sons of Israel here, or-
ganized the patrol to supplement
police surveillance of the area. He
said the police have "gone all our
to catch the vandals, "but they
can't just sit there all night.* He
deplored the fact that the resi-
dents of Wanamassa were "de.
veloping an attitude of acceptance
of petty delinquency."

A Ben-Gurion Story
A Swiss reporter interviewed
Ben-Gurion, and Ben--Gurion turn-
ed around and asked the reporter
how old he was. The reporter said
he was 40.
"You have 30 more years to be
young," said Ben-Gurion.
