DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
-Friday, March 26, 1965

A man best known for his
"baby blue" eyes, fractured violin
playing and fabled tightness with
a dollar is being honored by Bnai
Brith next month as one of four
Americans whose contributions to
the community exemplify the tradi-
tional purposes of the Jewish serv-
ice organization.
The man, of course, is Jack
Benny. He is being cited by Bnai
Brith as part of its 120th anniver-
sary celebration at an April 3 ban-
quet at the Americana Hotel, New
York.
To mark its four generations as
the oldest national service organ-
ization established in the United
States, Bnai Brith, in symbolic
tribute to the volunteer activities
of its 490,000 members, chose to
"honor its own" — selecting four
long-time members who in their
careers and by their community
activities personify the ideals of
the organization.
Mr. Benny, a member of Bnai
Brith for 25 years, was selected
together with Supreme Court
Justice Arthur J. Goldberg, the
later Senator Herbert H. Lehman
and former Ambassador Philip M.
Klutznick, who served with the
U.S. Mission to the United Na-
tions and is a former president of
Bnai Brith.

`Adopts' 3 Children
From E. Pakistan Bnai Brith to Honor
Three children (two brothers and
a sister) from East Pakistan have Generous Jack Benny

been "adopted" by Mr. and Mrs.
Bernard Wenst of Sussex St., Oak
Park. The Wensts, who have three
children of their own, are mem-
bers of Temple Beth El.
These adoptions were arranged
thigh the Foster Parents Mission
Club in Detroit, a group dedicated
to aiding overseas orphans and
poor children in India, Burma and
East Pakistan.
The new sons are 14 year old
John Kangoe Hembrom and 11 year
old Francis Fagu Hembrom. Their
sister, Anna Budni Hembrom, is 7.
Their family, now living in Roh-
anpur, emigrated from Andkorkota.
These people are tribal aborigines,
Mahalis, and basket makers by
trade. Since the cost of bamboo is
now quite high, the people have
had to turn to day labor — share
cropping, which is almost as bad,
since they know nothing of farm-
ing. The children suffer from mal-
nutrition. They could do with more
food, care, and an education.
"The children will not leave East
Pakistan," stated the FPMC Pres-
ident, "but the aid they receive and
the knowledge that someone is
really interested in them will truly
them feel they are members
te Wenst family."

HAVE PREPARED FOR YOUR EATING PLEASURE:

SALLY FIELDS

Sally Fields is one of five women
who were selected for honors by
Detroit Skyliner 'in the Salute to
Women Who Work Week.
Explaining the salute, Detroit
Skyliner stated:
"Three years ago Sally Fields
pioneered the opening of El Al
Israel Airlines office in Detroit as
the district sales manager. With no
previous knowledge of the airline
industry, and as the only woman
in the country to hold such a title
in her field, Mrs. Fields was so
successful that she was recently
appointed to her present public re-
lations manager position.
"A tireless worker, Mrs. Fields
first earned a degree in journalism
at the University of Michigan and
then devoted an additional 2 1 /2
years to law school. Thereafter she
went to work in the newspaper
field, spending many years with
the former Detroit Times and the
Free Press. Later she spent eight
years working with the Israel Gov-
ernment Materials for Israel.
"Along 'with her many successes
in the business world, the 1905
Quality Quintet winner has found
time to raise four children and
currently enjoys considerable at-
tention from nine active grand-
children. Her son is the well-known
band leader, Artie Fields."
