Andersonville' Next in Hollywood

(

BY HERBERT G. LUFT
Inc.)
HOLLYWOOD — Abby Mann,
author of the motion picture,
"Judgement at Nuremberg," re-
veals to this columnist that he is
working on a screen treatment of
MacKinley Kanto r's bestseller
"Andersonville" for producer-di-
rector Stanley Kramer, the very
same film maker who guided his
epic dealing with the crimes
against humanity committed by
the Germans in World War IL
Mann who has become an expert
on the period of Nazism after
writing "Nuremberg," "The Con-
demned of Alton" and "Ship of
Fools," now goes back in time and
space to the America of 100 years
ago, to an episode in the Civil
War involving the life and death of
many Union soldiers at Anderson
Station, a wooden stockade in a
pine forest in Sumter County,
Georgia.
Screenwriter Mann sees a
striking similarity between the
events at Andersonville and Da-
chau, Buchenwald or Sachsenhau-
sen; only the size of mass murder
increased from the modest fore-
runner of Nazis concentration
camps where a "mere" 14,000 in-
mates died of hardships, exhaus-
tion, hunger, or withered away for
lack of medical attention, to the
extermination of millions of civil-
ians in Hitler's Germany of twen-
ty years ago.
"We must shudder at a world
of Andersonvilles," summarized
in 1865 the chief prosecutor in
Washington, to which Abby
Mann adds that he wants to
show with his forthcoming pic-
ture how it could happen at An-
derson Station in the State of
Georgia 100 years ago.
The question of guilt for Ander-
sonville and Nazi horror camps
seems almost identical. Henry
Wirz as well as Adolph Eichmann
argued that they believed to be
dealing with a military situation
and they therefore had discharged
their own duty without concern
for any moral responsibility. "I
was not authorized to save one
single life," jabbered Wirz on
trial before the Military Commis
sion of the United States in Wash-
ington, D.C. A captain in the Con-
federacy and superintendent of
the prisoner of war camp in Sum-
ter County, Henry (Heinrich)
Wirz was of German-Swiss origin,
educated in Berlin and a Prussian
at heart. Abby reveals to me that

Kramer plans to sign German-
Austrian actor Oskar Werner for
the central character of Capt.
Wirz—a brilliant stroke of cast-
ing since Werner not only fits the
part, has the proper accent, but
also has shown his gift to recreate
on the screen with complete au-
thenticity the professional Prus-
sian soldier of the old school, as
he did in the G. W. Pabst picture
about the last ten days of Adolf
Hitler where he appeared as a
symbol of the duty-bound officer.
"In "Ship of Fools," Oskar
Werner appeared as Dr. Schu-
man, the ship's doctor and, ac-
cording to Abby Mann who
wrote the screenplay for Stanley
Kramer, gave a great perform-
ance. I attended the final day of
photography at Columbia Stu-
dios when the tag of the pic-
ture was staged against the
background of the pier of
Bremerhavn where a boatload
of fools is landing early in
1933 with returnees to Ger-
many.

Herr Glocken, the tiny gnome,
sums it all up in front of the cam-
era addressing the audience at
large with these words also fitting
for the forthcoming "Anderson-
vale" epic: "Look at them. Fools,
pimps, whores, cowards, potential
murderers. I can just hear you
saying, what has all this to do
with us? Nothing! You have a sense
of values. You understand love. If
you die tomorrow you die happy
because you've made the most of
your life. Of course, you'd be
crazy to take my word for it. I told
you I'm a fool. I'm a fellow who
is three feet six and I spent my
life wondering what I would do
if I were six feet three."
Most prominent in "Ship of
Fools" (to be released in August
of 1965) is German actor Heinz
Ruehmann, whom I interviewed
in the studio. He plays Lowenstein,
who believes that things will change
and Hitler has only the best in-
tentions. Ruehmann interprets the
character of Lowenstein in these
words, "A born optimist, the most
German of the passengers, he goes
back to the Third Reich—the only
Jew on board — right to his
death in the gas chambers. He is
the greatest fciol of them all."
These are the words of the actor
Ruehmann who should know what
happened in Nazi Germany where
he appeared in scores of films as
a much beloved star and matinee
idol.
Karen Verne who portrays the
mother of Gila Golan, the Israeli
actress (making her debut in "Ship
of Fools"), tells me of her past as
a non-Jewish German who really
left the Third Reich in 1936 to go
to England where she starred in
films with Rex Harrison, to come
to the U.S. in 1940 to appear in
"King's Row," "All Through the
Night" and two of the strongest
anti-Nazi f i 1 m s, "Underground"
and "The Seventh Cross." In 1945,
Miss Verne married Peter Lorre
and retired from the screen. But
after her divorce, the actress in
1952, resumed her career in mo-
tion pictures appearing in such
Stanley Kramer films "The Jug-
gler" and "Judgment at Nurem-
berg."
