American Jews of the 1880-1920
period in "Autobiographies of

25 Pct. Increase Noted in Toronto Unwed Mothers

TORONTO (JTA) — The num-
ber of unwed Jewish mothers who
came to the Jewish Family and
Child Service here for help in-
creased by 25 per cent in 1964, as
compared to the previous year, ac-
cording to a report by the agency.
The 19e4 total was 15.
Other changes noted in this field
by the agency concerned the aver-
age age of the applicants, the nat-

types of homes from which they
have originated. In past years, the
agency said, most of the unwed

Jewish mothers were from families
in lower income brackets. Now the
majority are from middle class
families and are either high school
or college students. The ages,
which used to range chiefly be-
tween 22 and 34, are now mostly
between 16 and 20. One recent ap-
plicant was 14. Very few of the
applicants can be classified as de-
linquents, the agency said.
According to the agency, the in-
crease in the numbers of unwed
Jewish mothers has been paralled
by a decrease in the agency's adop-
tion waiting list. The list has de-
clined from 72 to 51.
