The National Honor Society in-
ducted 67 new members of the
organization to bring its total mem-
bership to 105. Participants in the
program included President Ran-
dall Zusman, who gave a welcom-
ing address; Susan Marrich, who
spoke on the significance of the
National Honor Society emblem;
Nancy Garlock, on the character-
istics of scholarship, Vice Presi-
dent Leslie Stern, on the charac-
teristics of service; Sidney Hantler,
on the characteristics of character;
and Jules Gardin, who gave the in-
vocation and benediction.
Other members of the society
chosen for membership in their
junior year and assisting in the
program included Laura Barack,
Donna Kaufman, Joel Letvin, Hack
Nagler, Betty Rotberg, Susan Sal-
inger and Nancy Weingarten.
All of the National Merit
Scholarship semifinalists from
Southfield have been named fin-
alists in the scholarship competi-
tion. They include Sidney Hant-
ler, Nancy Garlock and Randall
Zusman. These students are now
eligible to become National
Merit Scholars. Announcement
of the scholars will take place
in the spring.
The annual Spring Forensics
Contest was held at the school on
March 10, with the results once .
again indicating the excellence of
the Southfield speech department.
Among the winners were: Original
Oratory first place. Carol Spickler;
extemporaneous speech first place,
Randy Silverston; declamation sec-
ond place. Morris Podolsky; inter-
pretative reading second place,
Carolyn Daitch; and humorous
reading second p 1 a c e, Mickey
Shapiro.
Other participants included: Ori-
ginal Oratory, David Krohn and
Melinda Lori a; extemporaneous
speech, Joel Stocker and Marty
Stoneman; declamation, Steve
Field, Leon Pedell and Laura
Schon; humorous reading, Steve
Grant and Sue Greenberg.
The spring musical, "The Sound
of Music," opened last night at
the Southfield auditorium. Other
performances will be held tonight,
tomorrow night and March 26-27
at the school, and April 2-3, at the
Masonic Temple.
The Southfield Blue Jay bas-
ketball team continues on its
winning ways as it won its first
District and regional champion-
ships in the history of the
school.
In winning the District crown,
the Jays defeated Birmingham Sea-
holm, Berkeley, and Brother Rice.
In the regional tourney, they de-
feated Hazel Park, and then de-
feated Pontiac Central. 65-56 for
the crown. All-State Honorable
Mention guard Rick Coleman led
the jays against Central with 33
points.
The state tourney finals will be
held tomorrow when the winner
of the Detroit semifinals with
Walled Lake, Austin, Southwestern
and Southfield will meet the out-
state winner for the title in Jelli-
son fieldhouse on the Michigan
State Campus.

were seventh and eighth grades
from the Beth Jacob Girls' School
and the Beth Yehudah intermed-
iates of the Boys' School.
Winning first place were Mur-
ray Platt and Stuart Jonas, who
constructed an intercommunica-
tions system.
Second place award was given
to Abe Spector and Saul Glogower,
and to Malka Flam, Miriam
Hirsch, and Shlomit Lewin. Third
place award went to Rachel Man-
delbaum and .Chaya Parshan and
to Marsha Fein and Sarah Baila
