U.S. State Department Inherits Woes
of Mid East as Feldman Resigns

WASHINGTON — The Johnson
administration has now reverted
to the philosophy of the Eisen-
hower administration by turning
the Arab-Israel problem complete-
ly over to the State Department.
President Johnson feels that spe-
cial intercession for Israel on a
White House staff level is no
longer needed. He decided against
designating a replacement for

cial counsel, who resigned re-
cently. Mr. Feldman advised both

The State Department is com-
mited to pursuit of improved re-
lations with Egypt's Nasser—if
necessary, at the expense of Is-
rael. The Department is con-
vinced that Nasser represents
the wave of the future in the
Near East. Egyptian-American
relations are deemed more im-
portant than the fate of Israel.

He pointed out that the Arabs
"are building sophisticated wea-
pons like guided missiles" and are
obtaining ultra-modern tanks, sub-
marines, and jet bombers from
the Soviet Union. "They have ob-
tained financing for military
equipment from oil-rich members
of the unified command," he said.

Mr. Feldman asserted that the
Arabs have "a diabolical plan for
the diversions of Israel's vital water
resources—and they have actually
embarked on this project." He
c alle d for increased American
vigilance, in view of tendencies in
the Arab world. In his view, "Arab
morale was strengthened to dan-
gerous proportions by their suc-
cess in getting West Germany to
halt arms shipments to Israel."
Mr. Weidman warned that Jor-
dan has grown belligerent despite
"every effort at peaceful solutions
to irritations along its 500-mile
border with Israel." He also cau-
tioned against "an Egypt sharpen-
ing its instruments of war against
Israel in Yemen and the Congo."
He called for vigilance and as-
sertion of views by supporters of
Israel.

NEW YORK (JTA)—Aryeh L.
Pincus, treasurer of the Jewish
Agency, in Jerusalem, told Amer.
scan Zionists that the Zionist
movement must find its way to the
college campus.

Speaking at a reception at the

Hotel Astor given by the Labor
Zionist Organization of America,

in honor of Marie Syrkin on the
occasion of her recent election to
the Jewish Agency executive, Pin-
cus said that the campus today is
the Zionist movement's major

front.
Marie Syrkin, who is associate
professor of English at Brandeis
University, said that she hoped to
reach youth in every possible way.
Prof. Syrkin is editor of the Jewish
Frontier, monthly magazine of the
Labor Zionist Organization. She is

the author of a number of works,
including a biography of Israel
Foreign Minister Golda Meir.

Said the spider to the fly:

"Your life is so short,
So soon you will die:
Do you know why?
You are scarcely born,
Scarcely on your wings,
Alive at morn',
And dead at dawn."

Intently the fly replied:
"All things -have their season,
All who have lived have died.
And man's murders' are a social suicide!
Some live more, some live less,
None escape the spider Death.
The kindset blessing, could we confess
