The history of anti-Semitism, as
seen by a Catholic priest, will be
published by Macmillan April 19.
In "The Anguish of the Jews: 23
Centuries of Anti-Semitism," Rev.
Edward H. Flannery traces this
horrifying history, implicating the
guilty and absolving the innocent
without regard to their stature
within the Christian community.
Fr. Flannery's interest in Ju-
daeo-Christian relations antecedes
the Vatican Council by a decade.
He believes that if the whole, fac-
tual history of anti-Semitism can
be brought to the attention of
people today, its recurrence may
be prevented, or at least, di-
minished.
The author thus conceives the
objective of his book as a kind of
public psychoanalysis. "Only a
courageous confrontation of the
buried demons of the past will
help Christians and Jews to adopt
the responsibility which is essen-
tial to mutual undersanding," Fr.
Flannery writes.
