MOSCOW (JTA) — A series of
widely advertised events honoring
the memory of Solomon Mikhoels,
the Yiddish actor who was mur-
dered in 1948, during the Stalin
purges of Jewish intellectuals, was
launched at the Bakhrushin Cen-
tral Theatrical Museum.
The announcement came from
Novosti, the Soviet news agency
without mentioning that Mikhoels
was a victim of Stalin's liquidation
of Jewish writers and actors. No-
vosti linked the occasions merely
to the observance of his 75th
birthday. Mikhoels was born in
1890.
At the gathering here addresses
lauding Mikhoels' greatness as an
artist, and works illustrative of his
career, were presented by critics,
actors, and Boris Filippov, director
of the Central Writers Club.
The program will be repeated
March 26. On March 23, another
observance honoring Mikhoels'
memory will be held at the Central
Actors Club here, the Novosti re-
port said.

When the Almighty Prevailed
"And it came to pass when Moses
held up his hand that Israel pre-
vailed, and when he let down his
hand, Amalek prevailed" (Exod.
17:11). Commenting on this; the
Rabbis said: "But could the mere
position of the hand of Moses in-
fluence the battle? The true mean-
ing of the verse is that at such
times as the Israelites directed
their thoughts on high, and kept
their hearts sincerely turned to
their Fathers in heaven, they pre-
