USY Teen-Agers Hold 'Rendezvous With Fate' The Sheraton Cadillac Hotel was the scene of the 12th annual USY Regional Convention last weekend. The Central Region of the Na- tional United Synagogue Youth Organization is composed of teen- agers from the states of Michigan, Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, parts of West Virginia and Eastern In- diana. Approximately 550 teens and adult advisers were in atten- dance. Following registration, Shabbat eve prayers and dinner Friday, a sociodrama was presented. It was written and directed by members of the cultural committee who tried to point out the dangers of the lack of identification with Jew- ish tradition and with the Jewish people. Throughout the entire conclave the weekend theme "613 and the Modern Jew—A Rendezvous With Fate" was examined, expounded, and explored through the media of the discussion groups, graphic arts and oratorical contests which preceeded the convention, a ser- mon-dialogue and speeches. The concept of the observance, vitality, and relevance of the com- mandments to comtemporary times and people was stressed constant- ly. The tradiaional observance of the Shabbat, kashrut and teffilin, among the other mitzvot, was maintained. Mayor Jerome Cavanagh views with approval the proclamation he signed last week declaring Mach 5-7 United Synagogue Youth Weekend. The occasion was the regional convention of the Con- servative youth organization. Looking on are (from left) Gary Moss, convention adviser, Arthur Lerner, Susan Blum, Jeffrey Weinstein and Rabbi Irwin Groner of Cong. Shaarey Zedek. Gov . Rommey issued a similar proclamation throughout the state of Michigan. Annual Scholastic Contest Local Students Win Keys for Writing ford; Cheryl Litke, Henry Ford; Lois Wiederman, Mt. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 28—Friday, March 12, 1965 The months of preparation on the part of the teen-agers and adult advisers produced a uni- fying spirit of congeniality and intellectual stimulation through singing, dancing, praying and discussing. Each delegate re- ceived a kit containing back- ground material and information which enabled a participant to gain deeper insight into the dis- cussion theme. Discussion leaders themselves attended special sessions once a week for ten weeks prior to the convention so that they would be able to provide correct informa- tion and provocative questions. On Saturday night the campaign- ing and election of officers for next season was conducted. Later that night a dance was held. The entire convention shifted the scene Sunday morning to Cong. Shaarey Zedek where the morning service was held. A brief convoca- tion ceremony was presented, dur- ing which two certificates were distributed: (1) A certificate of dedication—for having completed a weekend of positive, creative and dynamic Jewish study and living. (2) A tree certificate from the JeWish National Fund for the tree planted in Israel in honor of every attendee. One other highlight was a pho- nograph record of a dialogue be- tween Jim Lebeau, a past presi- dent of National USY, and Dr. Bernard Mandlebaum, provost of the Jewish Theological Seminary, given to everyone. Adult convention advisers were Bernard Jaffe, USY re- gional director; Rabbi Irwin Groner, regional youth commis- sion chairman; Trzi Berkal; "Mr. Convention" Gary Moss, con- vention adviser; Rabbi Pesach Sobel; Mrs. Nicholas Fenakel; Seymour Kaplan; Leonard Bar- uch; Louis Weinstein; and Lou Rosen. Over-all teen-ager chairman was Jeffrey Weinstein, and his co- chairmen were Susan Blum and Arthur Lerner. Committee chair- men were Neil Schneider, David Wolok, Don Skupsky, Karen Knop- pow, Susie Taylor, Kenny Lerner, Linda Smith, Jan Mendelson, Fran Shiovitz, Marlene Rosen, Mark Davis, Mark Schwartz, Rita Dry- mond, Debby Cohen, Jan Rosen, Sheldon Lewis, Gary Docks, Linda Levin, Dania Chajes, David Krohn, Mary Rosen, Larry Boxer, Mike Lubetsky, Harriet Bakalar, Shel Cohen, Sherri Terebelo, Barbara Harris, Howie Berris, Ruth Sugar, Ava Goldberg and Allen Olender.
